Need to improve dining area
I am renting a condo with a small dining area. I was able to fit my grandmother's dining room furniture (which means a lot to me) because the table has removable leaves plus drop leaves. I just feel it is a bit dull for my taste. I am open to ideas except replacing the furniture.

My entry nook needs SOMETHING
This is the space as you enter my small apartment (opposite the kitchen). I would love some ideas on how to maximize the space with storage without it feeling overwhelming as soon as you walk in. My style combines modern with a bit of glam x industrial. Access to the side walls is needed for the light switch and intercom.…

Exterior Design Question
Most know what a spiral staircase looks like. So I have always wondered why some city garden apartments have 2 to 6 steps when many who want a garden apartment need flat homes. Masons must conform to specific angles when making concrete ramps and too often there is insufficient garden apartment space for a ramp. I'm…

Help arranging a living room
Hi. I need some help. We bought this house a couple years ago and the living room is awkward. I haven't figured out what type of furniture or how to arrange it, so I havent invested in any furniture yet. It is just the two of us, in our late '50s. We have family that visits on occasion and on holidays. We have a large dog.…

What should we do with this wall?
We live in a 1914 craftsman and want to add some additional bookshelves in our living room. We are looking into modular systems but not sure what to do here. The wainscoting goes up to 26.5" and we'd prefer not to drill/mount anything on it. Love some ideas!

What Color Shutters for My White House?
Hi! One of my shutters got blown off this morning in a windstorm, which is finally going to force me to replace all of them. The previous homeowners installed ones that were too short so it's been on my to-do list anyway. I'm wondering what color I should get for this house, and also whether or not I should put them on the…

Living Dining Room Ideas for Furniture That's a Little Too Small But Has to Work for Now
Hello hello! I am new here and new to my current apartment. We moved into a much bigger space and now the furniture we have feels too small. For now we have to make it work, but I can't quite work out the best layout for the living-dining room. We have: 48" round dining table and 4 chairs 33.5" x 27" arm/lounge chair 87"…

What is the best mattress for back pain?
I have had the same queen-sized mattress for almost 11 years now (yikes!). It's getting to the point that when I roll over in the middle of the night (I'm a bit of an active sleeper) I can hear my back crack in like a dozen tiny pops. And I have back pain almost every day. We're looking to FINALLY replace our mattress this…

Organizing a Studio House
I live in a studio house which has my Livingroom, office, & bedroom all in one room that runs right into my kitchen, and then my bathroom which has the only inside door in the house. It is too cluttered to take pictures of, so just imagine a large rectangular room with one room at one end with a door on it. The house has 2…

Recommendations for hanging this oddly sized painting?
I got this painting in Turkiye recently; it's a thick paper painted with paint. The sizing is fairly odd so it's not possible to buy a pre-made frame for it. A custom frame really isn't in the budget. I attempted to hang it with sticky tack but it's too heavy and fell down within a few days. I also tried a wooden hanger…

My first apartment
I am 76 and in my first apartment after owning 5 houses in 3 states (we built the house in Malibu). It’s confounding to have 50 years of things—mostly valued for sentiment—but some valuable art, and to have to figure out 750 square feet of grey/beige walls and some carpet with the awful grey stained wood floors found…

Pink bathroom and boring kitchen!
Hi! I’m moving to a house that has a retro bathroom and a very boring kitchen and I’m keen to make them nicer. The photos are not the most recent ones. The walls are white now! The bathroom has beautiful original floor mosaics and pink tiles. It also has a light blue bath. The kitchen has very cheap cabinetry and not very…

Accent wall design in basement
Help! I’m stuck and design-fatigued after sketching, designing, and deciding everything for my unfinished basement. I’m…

Empty Projection Wall
I use the large wall in my living room as a projection spot to watch movies, but when it’s not in use, it looks so bare and boring. Curtains - how should we hang them?
Hi! My boyfriend and I just moved into our new space. It's an older building that has lots of beautiful wood moldings. We have two windows in our bedroom, I'm hesitant to hang curtains within them because I don't want to block the natural light during the day. But the moldings are nearly at the top of the ceiling so I'm…

Designing with wall-to-wall carpet :(
Hi all, I bought a 1BR condo in LA, and while it was pretty much turn-key, the one downside of the unit is that it is wall to all cream/beige carpet (aside from kitchen and bathroom). It was in really good condition (the previous owner was OCD) and I'm trying my best to also keep it clean (no pets, thankfully), but I have…
