Oh Annie, your hometown 😥 I have also been watching from my phone, and it's devastating to witness. I have a friend who lost their home to the fire, and some friends who are just waiting to go back and see the damage. It's all just very sad. I hope your friends are safe and that the worst is over. Thanks for sharing and for being here ❤️🩹

It's day four! Today, we're practicing the one-room rule. What room is everyone tackling? I'm doing my kitchen/dining (it's one combined space and in desperate need of decluttering)

Day 4: did a deep declutter of my bedroom closet. Been wanting to do this for a while now and identify which clothes I don't fit/don't like anymore.
Got a pretty big pile of clothes that I'm gonna donate next week. I hope it has a nice second destination with someone who needs some clothes but is tight on money. 😊

I'm also gonna treat myself to a new piece of furniture this weekend! My apartment deserves it now that I'm starting to take care of it better.

I am going to work on my primary bedroom and bathroom, which is basically one big open space, but which has less closet and bathroom storage space than a room that size should have. I feel like it is fairly clutter-free, but I lack storage for all the things I keep in that room, as it serves many purposes. I have most of the “stuff” organized and stored in decorative boxes, a rolling cart etc. But I’d love some insight on when it’s time to actually think about revamping a space, rather than just trying to get rid of things. I think I’m close to that point.

love the 3-minute sweep. I finally tackled this huge decorative bowl that is a dust and clutter catcher. It is clean and empty for the first time in a decade, I am ashamed to say but also proud to have faced up to it finally!!!

I have kind of caught up with task 2 after starting late. I have daily and weekly committed to paper but the additional tasks will have to be kind of a monthly "To-Do" list.
Before bed tonight I will manage a sweep of the kitchen. I still don't have dedicated spaces for some things. I am trying to figure out how to effectively use the cupboard over the fridge. It is deep, high and has a security monitor blocking the doors.
Task 4 is truly going to be ongoing for me. When I moved in here at the end of Sept, my sons helped me stack all the boxes into the main bedroom. By the beginning of Dec, I had managed to move my bed into that room and set up a guest room. Now my decluttering project is to set up my bedroom as I want it. I check the second hand stores for a dresser regularly. I will know it when i I see it.

Ok. Some of you may think this is a cheat but keep in mind it is Jan 9 and I have been struggling to just take down and put away Christmas so that was my "declutter" in fact, I still have Christmas presents to open! I am in SoCal and am glued to the TV watching the news coverage of the fires. At one point I mistakenly got an evacuation order. The fire is 26miles away from me and moving north west. Keeping an eye on the news helps me stay informed.

Love the surface sweep tool. Last night I did a mini sweep of my art studio…. a tiny bedroom that has become a drop area since I had a hip replaced in August. I am excited to get it back again as a usable area. Lots left to do. The landlord is coming this morning to fix a leak in our tub and I moved everything out of my closet so he could get to the access to tub pipes. It all went in my studio. Hopefully he will be done today and I can practice "sparking joy" and filling the out box as I sort putting it back. Now that the bedroom closet is empty it will not be too hard to do a one room declutter of the bedroom this morning. This week has been all about ice so I am staying in. We live right on eastern divide… so pretty extream weather this week. Husband is doing most of the dog walks (they do not want you to fall with new hip) Nobody wants to fall. The march of winter footwear into living room with various combinations of tracs and nano spikes ice grippers is pretty funny. None of them work great on ice but you do what you can. The living room cure will be a faantastic before and after.

This is a great question! Which room are you thinking of revamping? Do you feel like it's no longer serving a purpose, or you're just feeling like switching things up?

The cupboard above the fridge is always a tough one! I personally use that storage for things I don't need frequent access to but like to bring out when I'm hosting large groups of friends. I have a lot of large vases, extra table linens, etc. I use my small step ladder to grab things when I need them. It's a simple method, but it has been working for me
Also, I love what you said about task 4 being ongoing — that is totally okay! It's an ongoing process for sure. And filling a room with things you do want after you have decluttered takes time, especially when you're searching for something secondhand. I love the hunt for specific items. Good luck!

Not a cheat at all! That's a big decluttering project, and a hard one when something big is happening near you and taking up your mind. I hope everything stays alright down by you 💛

Oh gosh, yes please no falls! Winter terrain and ice are no joke. The benefit to more time indoors is more time to declutter and dream up the possibilities of your space. Can't wait to see your before and after 😊

Happy Friday, friends! Today (and the next two Fridays of the Cure), you have the flexibility to decide what you want to work on. You can be playing catch up, tackling a bigger project, etc. The decision is totally yours, and the only "rule" here is that you treat yourself to something nice after you finish your task 🤗
Yesterday, I decluttered my kitchen/dining area but didn't get into the details of cleaning the floors. We have white wood plank floors — they're beautiful and SO annoying to keep tidy, so that's what I'll be doing today! I'll treat myself by going to a new cafe in town and picking up something tasty 🥐

What I like about this challenge is that it shows me that just taking a small step to get started often unleashes the motivation to keep going. I meant to do the one room declutter/wipe down and I ended up deep cleaning the entire kitchen for the afternoon. My husband asked, “where did all this energy come from??” It just snowballed from the January Cure! Need to remember that for other things I’m putting off (my desk!) maybe just committing to one small step will break through the procrastination.

Day 4: I picked our hall cupboard which holds all sorts, from towels and toilet paper to cleaning chemicals, Christmas decorations, a travel bird cage and spare toothbrushes. It is such a relief to have tidied shelves in there. In particular the creams and home maintenance supplies were especially muddled and confusing. Some things I did have to just put back in the cupboard because I ran out of time, but at least it's categorised and therefore will be easier to sort through when I'm able.

I am just now getting to Day 2 but I keep telling myself that it is ok; the point is just to do it. This is year is all about completing the Cure, no matter how long it takes. In order to do it, I need to get it done with a 30 minute time frame, and then move on, regardless of whether it is perfect.
I created my list on a yellow legal pad. Tonight I am going to share with my husband and make sure he is on board. I would like to print it and post it physically in our kitchen, once we fine tune it. I would love to get to a point where, on the weekends, I don't feel I have to choose between cleaning our apartment and going out and having fun.

Yesterday I was happy that I got the kitchen counters decluttered and cleaned and put a new toaster out. It looks great!
But then I went out for an appointment and to pick up my grandson at the bus stop. Oh no!! I fell on the ice, ended up in urgent care, and have a fracture in my lower leg. I’m so sad, my January Cure may be a March or April Cure.

I'm caught up, yay! I do find it helps to think about how much time I can realistically spend on each task and adjust it accordingly. And I skipped doing the daily task list because I knew it wouldn't work for me - I just updated my old monthly/quarterly lists.

It's so hard to step away from the coverage of the fires. A pretty reliable source posted that my childhood home in Altadena is gone. (No family there anymore). I feel oddly like that closed the book … still concerned about friends, though. BTW once we still had our Xmas tree up in April. We snuck it out of our building in the middle of the night. The next day other tenants were really confused by all the pine needles in the hall. (We were very young).

I'm with you on Day 2. Somehow doing it that way (the walk through) helped me to look at my home with fresh eyes and prioritize what I needed to do. And I already have a monthly/quarterly checklist that's easy to update. I'll probably do the old-school walk-through on my own but it's more fun to do it with the group!

Today ended up being a total waste. My mom called to have me take her to the hospital for an x-ray after a fall a few days ago. Today was one of the worst days to go there. X-ray was done by 1pm, but it was an 8 hour wait to speak to a doctor for results.
i I knew there would be days like this, but at least i got my clothes through the wash this morning.

You got this! The hardest part is often just getting in the habit of making it a part of your routine, but once you crack that code, it actually starts to become fun and less of a dreadful thing. Baby steps! I like to turn my cleaning sessions into mini dance parties and blast music while I parade around my home tidying things up. Anything to get me motivated 😅

checking in: so far I have only completed Day 1.
Day 2: I put a few regular chores on my calendar so I would at least see them on the days I intended to do them. I can more or less stick to the schedule that way, and be aware of the things that didn't get done on time. I did this about six months ago though, so to actually do the Cure assignment, I will be re-assessing and adjusting as needed. I'd also like to find a free resource online for task scheduling that I can make work for me.
Day 3: I sort of did this yesterday morning, but in a very scattered way. I was just leaning into the ADHD and flitting from room to room moving objects around and putting things away. So all my rooms are about 80% "done", just have to get that last 20% (story of my life).
Day 4: I can't even decide which room to go all-in on. But I put on my weekend list to "finish" the living room.
Weekend: I'm going to clear out a cabinet in my garage where I store tools, paint, and miscellaneous and try to make room for the random things that are scattered about the rest of the garage. Then I've got a bunch of stuff to give away on my Buy Nothing group.

My family has been out of our home since Tuesday night for evacuation orders so I’m doing some of the cleaning jobs at our tiny temporary place while we wait to go back. I think I will need to repeat the whole thing in February since all our Christmas decorations are still up. It is a weird feeling to be grateful to have a home to go back to while we see that so many of our community members and school families do not. 😕

I've got nearly 50 years of accumulated stuff to go through so I'm finding it hard to get through these. How do you put stuff away when so much has no logical home?!
But I picked the "sitting room" ( a front room that's not the living room) and removed 2 bins that were sitting there taking up floor space. One of them had all the stuff that was on our old fridge and I've already gotten rid of several items—but not before I did a min-dust and a floor vacuum. Makes me smile when I look in that room now!
Going through the 2 bins might take some time, but I'll get through it. And I can always move some of the stuff to my "maybe" bin if I'm not ready to say goodbye to it.

Packed up Christmas decor and weeded out some mugs we don't use. I had already jettisoned a garland that I was done with when we were decorating. I can almost eliminate one storage box. Almost! Everything is packed better this year, so I'm happy!

Did day 4 & 5 on the weekend
Day 4: picked a utilities closet that also has my washer inside and that I also use to store items that need to be recycled (paper, bottles, etc). Put a lot of items where they actually belong and cleaned the shelves. Looks better now.
Day 5: I cleaned my oven. Enough said. Probably the task I hate most. Now when I look at the clean oven I never want to cook/bake anything there anymore so it will stay clean. lol

I understand your frustration. I just downsized from a six bedroom to a two bedroom after 28 years. Too much of the "stuff" was in boxes from the previous move. Worse yet, I thought I had already disposed of things. I found myself making regular garbage and recycling trips. Also allotted one day a week to donations.
I am here because I have to further downsize.

My mom is okay. I have to get used to this. She tends to build things up in her mind. At Christmas she spent a night in hospital for something that wasn't needed. She fell just before the new year and was sent for an x-ray due to her age. I should have already taken her to ER, but didn't think of it. Now i I have to figure out how to get a medical alert set up in case she falls again. I live only 5 minutes from her.

My weekend so far:
I have small stacks of bedding and towels unpacked. Now I need to find storage homes for these things.
Right now I am using under the bed Sterilite containers for:
1. Throw blankets2. Queen size sheet sets
3. odd sheets and pillow cases for camping
4. Double size sheet sets
5. Summer weight sleeping bags
I need to buy two more containers when it is safe to drive to the next town. Maybe late March, early April. I know others do it but I am not confident out there with truckers and locals.
I have a gigantic linen closet but since it is located in the shower room, I also need containers for that.
My other weekend task is to contain the kitty litter and make it moveable. I will post a picture when done.

Update: I cleared out the cabinet in the garage. Threw away a lot. Designated a lot for the Buy Nothing group which is gradually being picked up by various members. Managed to create enough space to tidy away a few things that needed a place. There are still a few more things that need places, but the garage is relatively under control at this time.
I also dusted the cobwebs throughout the house. I'll see if I can mark anything else off my list before the end of the day, but "reading" and "resting" are also on the list.2 -

My word for Day 6 is "Welcoming!" I love my home and I'm lucky to have family and friends to enjoy it with, but sometimes I'm so busy that tidying up and cleaning just seems too overwhelming. I'm trying to remind myself that the people I love will understand if there's a little dog hair in the corner or some unopened mail piled on top of the desk (if they are judgmental jerks, why would I want them in my life, right?). I'm also trying to build better habits to keep things cleaner and tidier so I can just randomly invite people to come by without checking to make sure that the shoes are cleared away from the front door first!

My ONE WORD for the year is going to be "Fresh". That is how I want my home (and by extension me 😆) to feel. One of my favorite books is Home Comforts by Cheryl Mendelson. I have read the introduction alone a million times. What always resonated with me was that she wants her home to be fresh, never stuffy, dusty, smelly, musty, dark….I like to have light, fresh air, shiny surfaces. If there are any smells, they have to be good smells from flowers, cooking or just clean air. Natural smells. This is just how I want my house to FEEL, and it does not involve any decorating styles or colors. 2025 will be FRESH!

My one word for Day 6 is “comfortable”. That’s what I’ve aimed for in life as far back as I remember: comfort!

My word for Day 6 is CONSISTENCY! If I do this stuff every single day consistently, it will not take much time and the results will be great. But I know if I slack off or do it inconsistently, nope nope nope.

My word is also "comfortable".
I used day 5 to catch up and to refine my task list a bit. I starred the tasks that are easy wins, ones that I can do in just a few minutes, like clean a toilet or get the shower curtains in the wash. Today I'm going to get through as many of these as I can.
