January Cure 2025 - Tasks & Discussion

My win today is that Task 2 is the gift that keeps on giving. On Day 2 I made a customized checklist for every day to-dos plus one or two weekly to dos and one or two monthly to-dos. This has been incredibly motivating and rewarding. Here's why: it flexes to my energy levels and schedule.
So today I just looked over the checklist and picked two things I wanted to do: clean the guest bathroom and do the baseboards. Easy, looks great, done. And this fits with the flexing of the plan because:
On days when I cook (three days a week) I do the daily stuff and maybe on weekly or one monthly task, and I check them off on the list and give myself props. On days when my partner cooks (three days a week) or when we go out/order in (one day a week), I have time and energy to do more and check off a couple of weeklies or monthly tasks as well. This feels GREAT. And he is doing his half now, too, precisely because it is all so clear on the checklist, whether something is done, who did it, and when. The checklist from Day 2 is genius, and our house—-a pretty medium or not-big house at 2000 sq ft—-is already looking SO much better even after this relatively short time. THANK YOU, January Cure!

End of week 3, I picked a chore, I cleaned my 6 gallon fish aquarium. The water is so clear now and the "children" are happier. As am I. Also, started my grocery list for Feb. and my bill budget book. This challenge has really motived me this time around.

For my project, I decided to paint the door from the kitchen into the garage. We had the door replaced a couple of months ago and I still haven't painted it, mostly because it will have to stay ajar while it dries and we have an indoor - only cat. But she will be spending the day at the vet on the 29th to get spayed, so that's the day my door gets painted!

When we lived in an older home with little bathroom storage or space, I used an over the door shoe organizer for my makeup and beauty products. (Actually the laundry room door) Tremendously Handy! We now live in an open concept house—I miss having doors to organize goodies.

recovering the seats of our dining room chairs. Well, I did one and cut the foam/fabric for the others. And I have the workspace set up with the tools to get it done over the next week. Treat was an evening with some friends. 😊

for the landing strip, have done the hooks, doormat and shoe tray. Now trying to beautify my spot for hand lotion, lipstick/balm/mints and add a little mirror. Maybe add to a developing gallery wall? Has anyone done that?

It looks like I was last here and ready to post at the 2 minute day. But i I didn't. I had a two minute task and enlisted the help of a neighbor. Which has kept me busy in the evenings unpacking more boxes.
audit day - install bollards in driveway, repair soffits, paint entire interior, drain and refill hot tub, build catio, build cat litter station, recode locks.
toolkit day - that was part of my move, ensuring I had the Allen keys, screwdrivers, levels and wrenches needed. I am still looking for the right cutting tool for the cat litter project.
starting project - all of my projects are either out doors or need ventilation. With temperatures below freezing both day and night, this is not the time.
this brings me to today. I had already installed all I could in entry. Mat, shoe horn hook, umbrella drip area, welcome mat outside.

I would like to have all of these features in one space (I've been doing the Cure for years and ponder this every year), but my entry is too choppy to fit it all. In front of the door, I have a slate tile "rug" embedded into the wood floor (great for snowy days), with shoe bench, open closet for coats & baskets of hats/tissues/dog leashes, and cool wooden circle hooks sprinkled on the wall for guests. Next door is the powder room (mirror), and next door to that is the office (hooks for bags, a basket for mail). It works.

The amount of joy that your comment brings me 🤩 Thank YOU for sharing and being on this journey with us! I'm curious if you have your checklist visibly out somewhere in the home that both of you can see (like on the fridge), or is it just something that you two are individually checking separately?

Aww! I want to see your aquarium!

Tomorrow's the big day then — love it! I hope everything goes well with your cat's procedure 💛

This is such a great hack! @maymelelam8768 could you hang something similar like this on your wall (sans door)?

I'm impressed! Can't wait to hear how the chairs turn out

Great job on the landing strip progress 😊 You're onto something with the gallery wall because that's today's task! What do you think of the cluster style?

So much progress is being made 👏

If it works for you, that's all that matters! I'm in a similar situation in my house. I'm setting up my landing strip in my front entrance, but I think I actually need to do it somewhere in my kitchen/dining area near my back door because that's where we come in and out more with the dog. I'm trying to find a nice balance of setting up for both areas

Hi everyone! Can you believe we're in the final week of the Cure? I'm excited about today's task: finding and framing artwork 🖼️
I just set up a cluster gallery wall with artwork all relating to my Basset Hound, Lady, near her little back corner of my house. I need to add more to it, but I'm loving where it's at already!

Just a heads-up, apropos of today's assignment: Michaels is having a buy one, get one free sale on some of their frames this week. I'm going to pick a couple up; I already had a couple of things I wanted to frame and put up before I even got today's email.

For my weekend project, I went over all the clothes in my armoire, put some in the outbox, and reorganized all the rest so it looks neat when I open the doors. I refolded them in a new way (rolled up and on end, a la Marie Kondo) so that I hope I'll be able to see everything and can pick out one shirt or whatever without knocking over all the others. We shall see! I've been intending to do this for a long while, so am thrilled it's finally done! For my treat: dinner and movie with a friend (it was also a birthday celebration).
Other projects in the offing: clean and repair the tub. Buy lampshade holders and use them on a vintage lamp I found and husband has been refurbishing, adding some vintage glass shades I found in the street. Take a beautiful old photo of my grandmother as a teen to a framer and have it framed.

Thanks for sharing @Annie !!

Way to go @Zephy ! I hope you share photos of your other projects. Would love to see the vintage lamp and the lampshade holders you end up buying.

This is the artwork. It was made by my late husband's aunt and sold in a silent auction at a family reunion in 1988. I kept it put away because my husband was a heavy smoker in the house. So first I have to wash it. I thought perhaps I could do that come summer and dry it in the sun. Once it is back to original color, then I would pin it to a canvas and frame it. I have a couple of reasonable spots for it.
I have one other piece of art that my daughter made in drama class. It goes quite well with the art on the outside of my house. I have a full size Elephant mural on my house, and a mermaid on the back. Anyway, with keeping with the jungle theme, I bought a rhinoceros foot stool, I have frogs in the bathroom and I will be mounting a foam giraffe head in the livingroom. This project takes ventilation while varnishing the backing.

Holy cow! Elephant and mermaid murals? That sounds like fun! I like your froggy bathroom too.
Not sure how large or heavy your round textile is, but pinning it to a backing and then hanging is not supposed to be good for the textile, as its weight pulls down on the pins, the holes enlarge, and it gets bent out of shape. I do not speak from experience here, and it may not matter so much, but I pass it on for what it's worth. Maybe use lots of pins to take the weight off any one place? I love that you're using a homemade textile as art! And I really don't know how else to hang something round. Maybe baste it to a backing, and then hang the backing?
I have a beautiful embroidered linen tablecloth I have never used which is full of stains! I have no idea what or why. Tried hand washing in the sink, but the stains are still there — brownish, looks like it got wet at some point. So now I'm not sure what to do with the tablecloth. Any ideas for removing stains from old linen?

I have it at my (get ready to laugh) "command center" (the ridiculousness of this… it's my desk's vertical file, so the checklist is the first thing I see when I come in to work at the desk. I pull it out, check off the "make bed," "clear off nightstand," "clean up bathroom counters/mirror," because that stuff is first-thing. Those check-offs are so motivating, and I can see the daily work (since it's my day to cook dinner, I'll also do the clean and sweep kitchen/take out trash/clean up garbage can and behind it. task set, which partner does on the nights he cooks dinner). I can also choose whichever weekly tasks and monthly tasks I feel most like doing that day. Today that's two "weeklies": doing laundry, and while it's running, dusting the house; then putting laundry away. I might or might not also do the baseboards (a monthly). Sometimes if I am cooking something elaborate or have a busier day, I skip the monthly task and pick up an extra on a day partner cooks.
The real benefit is that partner is picking up so much ore slack now with the lists. It is mildly competitive—-he says "I did two monthlies today, what about you?" And I say, "Wow, you WON today!" (and we both actually won).
I love love love the checklist. Things are actually looking so much better around here already. Thank you!

Daniela, your cluster's composition is amazing: are you an artist or designer? Because look how the visual line from the top picture at left, over to the pics and hang-up gear on the other wall, is a gentle downward diagonal, which echoes the strong downward diagonal visual line of the bright-coral inner arch; and the plant gracefully echoes your pic-to-pic-to-hangings line as well! WOW. Impressive composition. Thanks for sharing that. It's giving me some ideas. (uh oh, dangerous)

Hi everyone! Hope Week 4 of The Cure is going well for you all. I'm Danielle, our Executive Home Director, and I'm here to chat all things landing pad, art framing today, and shelf styling today — basically all of the things we've been doing this week as tasks for The Cure! Let me know if you have any questions… happy to answer them! Just comment on this thread, and I'll pop back in here throughout the course of the day! And hope you are already falling back in love with your home as part of the program. That's the best part! And keep going — we're almost there!!

The heaviest part of that is the cardboard it is wrapped in. The pins would be simply to secure it in place until I can place it under glass. I am pretty sure it is crochet with a small hook and embroidery cotton. The frogs I have been collecting since the late 80's.
However I do the cleaning it will be laying flat for the whole process.

I have questions about the shelf styling. I've read it a few times but remain confused… is there an illustration or video that can be linked to show how to do this? I feel like I'm taking this literally and I can't quite figure out how to do this properly. Thanks!

I got my chosen project done today. I painted the door from the kitchen into the garage while my cat was at the vet getting spayed. She's a strictly - indoor cat and I had to keep the door propped open for a few hours, so the timing was right. And she came through her surgery just fine!
Yesterday I went out and bought frames for my "grouping", and framed a couple of things. I haven't hung them yet but I'll post a picture when I do. I also bought a small shelf that I'm going to use to help organize my landing strip. I'm going to paint it before I put it up. I already have an old mirror that I think will look good above it.
It feels good to have my project finished!

Just here to say that I'm a big fan of homes with themes, and I love that yours is jungle-themed! Makes decorating all the more fun!

I've had some luck removing stains from vintage linen following these instructions. Basically cold water and vinegar, then a Borax soak, and hang dry. I thrifted a bunch of linens in Italy during my honeymoon. They were stunning, but I didn't realize they were stained until I got home. Most of the stains are gone now 😌

Nothing like a little friendly competition to get the household moving and grooving 😆 Haha this is great. And it makes the whole process a lot more fun, right?! I'm so glad it's keeping your space looking and feeling better. Keep up the good work!

Oh wow, this is such a nice compliment. Thank you so much! I am a designer so I do dabble in a gallery wall here or there, but I believe anyone can pick up the cluster wall! What I love about it is that it gives you more room for experimentation and playing around with the movement of the pieces. Where I landed was just what felt right for me 🙂 If you try out any of your ideas, I would love to see them!

Oooo I can't wait to see the photo when you share! Good job, Annie!

@DanielaAraya Thanks for the washing instructions for linens! I'll try them.

We're moving from the shelf to the sofa for day 19's task!
What does everyone think of the 2-2-1 rule? I've tried it on my bed before, so I'm excited to give it a go on my sofa 🛋️

Of course! I hope it works for you

Hi @matchamonster7651 Yes, check this video out! I used it to restyle a packed shelf, and I think the gridlines that our video producer added make it easier to understand! You know artists… not always the easiest to explain their genius in words. Please LMK if this helps at all.

Sometimes, the most challenging part of any task is just getting started. We have been having a lot of below-normal temperatures and haven't been able to get out of the house. I got so bored that I started decluttering and organizing my craft area in the den. I found treasures and grouped like items together. I also gathered the projects I wanted to do first in a more accessible location.

The video was helpful to visualize this concept, thanks! Now, to find a home for all the books!!

I knew I needed something else for my couch! Exploring the house today for best accent pillow options!! May need to create/buy something with more color/texture.

Anymore I find that I spend all my time sorting and gathering like items realizing I have more than my fair share of projects. 🤣 @user9388445
