Decluttered my 21-year-old college-student son's dresser drawers and closet with him - like an organizing coach! 😁. He and I both had clearer heads and a sense of accomplishment afterwards. Added lots of stuff to growing donation pile and set up outbox.

Good Morning! (It’s 9:39 am in Germany)

I have a question that keeps bothering me: how do I manage to get rid of old things? The problem is that I see the items that I no longer use or don't like as still useful. And my ecological conscience forbids me from throwing them away. Selling them or finding a way to a charity takes up a lot of time. That's why I have all that junk in my basement, it's getting bigger and bigger and I feel overwhelmed. Do you have any idea how I can deal with it?

    Thanks for answering! 🫶🏼

  • Yesterday I decluttered part of my closet where I had just been shoving my mostly clean sweaters. I got rid of a few things, trying to use the container concept to limit my clothes, and it’s looking a lot better. Our closet is very small so I have more I need to do.
I’m ahead of the game today! I invested in a housekeeping calendar this year that includes daily, weekly, and 1 bigger tasks a week. It fits pretty well with my house so I’m excited! I think I’ll work on the big task in the journal for this week (organize pantry).
sounds like everyone is off to a great start! Now I’m motivated to look at my art supplies

I did something different for my Day 1 challenge. I decluttered and organized my desktop, adding a new photo from Christmas. I was planning on cleaning a corner of my bedroom, but the deskktop took a lot of time (those icons are so difficult to move around!).😫 It was an unconventional decluttering task, but a decluttering task nonetheless!

Hi from New York! This is a great question, and a very valid thing to experience. I sometimes feel similarly, especially when the things I'm debating getting rid of have sentimental value. The way I overcome this is by donating to a charity or finding neighbors/friends who are in need. Can you host a sidewalk sale or post in online communities (Facebook groups, local forums, etc.) about leaving free things out for your neighbors? This is something we do a lot in NYC and people always come to pick things up, which makes it easier for me. Some charities will do local pickup too. I'm not familiar with what's around in Germany, but maybe you can ask around!

Oh a housekeeping calendar sounds great! Where did you find yours? Bravo for being ahead of the game. It seems like we all have an excess of art supplies, doesn't it? 😅

Hi everyone — it's day 2 of our January Cure!

Today we're going to be talking about making a cleaning checklist that you can use yearlong. You can use pen and paper or go digital, but make sure that whenever you are putting this together, you’re able to return to it when you need it

What made it to your checklist? Share in the comments below 😊

Great job, Patty! Nothing beats the feeling of a clean dining table (speaking from experience as someone who always has clutter there!)

yesterday morning I potted mail-order amaryllis bulbs so I could use the box they came in as an out box. In the evening I tackled the kitchen junk drawer. Electricity went out after I had the drawer empty and everything spread on the kitchen table. the good news was lots of votive candles were in junk drawer and a lighter. I got her done, junk sorted and returned. Outboxed right in kitchen garbage can.

  • Wow, this was really hard for me! I’m not prone to scheduling my home tasks, and tend to do postage stamp cleaning. I’m working on this list, made daily, weekly, biweekly lists, etc. I like the idea of putting reminders on my phone. I may do that.

    Hi,

I am very new to this. I am trying to download the calendar and the check list and I can't find any of that. It also says there is 25 things to get rid of. I can't find that either. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you!

Yesterday I set up my outbox (paper grocery bag) and decluttered my email inboxes. Today I put together a cleaning list for daily, weekly, monthly, seasonal and annual tasks using a copy/paste method from the compilation of your linked articles. I whittled down the pasted list based on our home environment and then added to it. Ex: My daily list also includes taking out recycling, compost, and kitchen garbage as well as dealing with daily mail/paper recycling and sorting.

Day 1 I decluttered the landing strip, which had spilled over onto the dining room table. I already had an outbox for some ornaments I decluttered, so I stuck with that.
Day 2, I'm finding myself extremely resistant to this task. I can't pinpoint why. I'm used to the old January Cure where you walk through the house and make a list of things to do, so I might be getting stuck because I'd rather do that then list the things I already do. Anyone else?

Hi from Austria! Similar issue here. What I do with my unused things: I am part of a group on Facebook called "Share & Care" - not sure if there are groups like that in Germany as well (also google "Freecycle"). In any case people post their things there and other people come and pick them up (can be anything from individual items to - let's say 3 bags of miscellaneous clothing items or even furniture). We also have open book shelves in various places where you can donate books and we have something called "Give Box" - a small hut where people can bring their unused items and other people can just pick up items for free.
Other ideas where you could donate your things: check if there is something like a "Sozialmarkt" in your town or whether the Red Cross picks up things. I also sometimes donate things to the local women's shelter or to a homeless shelter. Finally there are tons of flea markets (profit or charity) that gladly take things (churches, animal shelters,…). I agree that it's somewhat more complicated than in the US but there are numerous options. Hope I could help!

I completely agree with you on this. Since I have housekeepers who come bi-weekly, this task doesn’t fully apply to me. The day before they arrive, I provide them with a list of specific items to focus on, in addition to their regular tasks like vacuuming, dusting, cleaning the bathrooms, and taking out the garbage and recycling. For instance, I might ask them to clean the balcony as a specific focus. However, there are certain chores I prefer to do myself and ask them to skip, such as making the bed, doing laundry, cleaning out the fridge, dishes, or managing any clutter removal or organization.

Day 2 - I appreciated the nudge to take time to make something that will be useful (hopefully) the entire year to come. I have to try to find a mental category that a chore chart/rotation is an ideal framework or reminder and not a measure of my weekly success — otherwise I start to resent and forget the list because it feels like I'm failing to measure up week after week. I followed the suggestion of "Lambert's Lately" and did a cleaning rotation where each week has a specific area of focus. It's essentially a "monthly to-do list" but I like designating which week of the month I'm going to attempt the monthly chores for that part of the house. Feels less ambiguous to me than thinking I just have this huge list of monthly chores looming out in front of me at the beginning of the month.

  • I decluttered my mail sorter in my entryway. Some of what I decluttered ended up in another pile on my desk, which is another story and a goal for the year, but I decided to stick with the time allotted and not go down a filing rabbit hole. This is my third attempt at the January Cure, which I love, but I never finish because of a heavy work schedule. Trying not to try to be perfect.

Happily I still have my outbox from last year, which has served me well. It's an old Pampers box that I covered with plain paper so as not to attract attention. It's tucked under the desk and when it starts to overflow, I know it is time to address it.

This view is really helpful, thanks for that! I already donate things, but even those they don’t want to have, I can’t let go, because don’t they still have a value? 🤯 It’s really a psychological issue.

Totally understandable to prefer to do things a certain way if you're used to that already! The main goal of this task is to help you become more aware of all the repetitive cleaning tasks at hand in the home. How you create these lists can be up for interpretation, and hopefully you can still take some tips away from the article!

Progress over perfection! While it's always fun to do the Cure in real-time with the community, you can definitely take it at your own pace and pick up where you left off if you need to. What matters is that you're doing it 😊

Day 3's task can be done in just three minutes — it's surface sweep time! 🧹

What did everyone think of this exercise?

I did a surface sweep of my car-but started first by bringing out a few items from the house: library books to return on the next errand run, cleaned reusable grocery + produce bags to stow in the back, topped up the small hand sanitizer spray in the console. The sweep included checking to make sure my glove box documents (registration, insurance) were current, recycling the old docs. Wiped down the hard surfaces with a damp paper towel.

Re: favorite habit/household tip: I use the big blue IKEA shopping bags instead of hampers or laundry baskets. Doesn’t take up much space in a closet and they are lighter and easier to tote around. Possible to carry more than 1 at a time. The bags are also great for hauling in firewood!

Do you have some kind of "giveaway" online marketplace where you could make a quick post on one of the items? Maybe just give away one thing and see how you feel?

I am a big fan the "surface sweep" which I try to do almost daily in one or more rooms in my house. Because I live with clutter-y people (spouse & child), this task is a bit sisyphean for me. I enjoyed making the checklist yesterday; I added the checklist to my to my productivity app to see if the daily reminders work.

  • Seepocke
    Seepocke Posts: 5

Day 2: I ended up skipping this for various reasons, mostly because it does not fit my schedule.

Day 3: I really liked the idea of the surface sweep and it was actually fast and fun to do. However, there were some aspects about it that I didn't like.

PROS: instant results on three surfaces where lost of miscellaneous items end up. Very focused time-frame.

CONS: I ended up taking the box to 3 different rooms because my place is currently quite clutter-free (I had lots of time off for the holidays) and found it very time consuming to have to then sort the items according to places they belong. Since there were lots of smallish items in the box, I ended up finding things in the end that actually belonged with other items in the box, so I feel that time was wasted. I also can see this method being an issue for people who are then overwhelmed with the contents of the box and never get around to sorting it out again.

Would I do it again? Probably, especially if there is a bigger mess and I can focus on ONE room only.

I just signed up, so I have to catch up. Bonus, since I am in my second downsize stage. I was moving from a 6 bedroom family home to 3 bedroom heritage home, or so I thought. I ended up in a 2 bedroom modular home. It has perks.

One perk is three sheds outside. One is very much storage of tools and outdoor equipment, a second is a mini workshop, the third is cozy inside. This is my current outbox. I have shelves out there and can easily open up for a yard sale in spring.

For day one, my husband and I cleaned out our 2nd fridge and the area around it in the garage. We were getting rid of it (it was from 1984!) and getting one that works better, so … easy choice. I did NOT put my old leftovers in my outbox to donate, LOL! (I do have a outbox already.)

For day two, I'm going to revise the checklists I already have. I'm a couple of days behind but trying to catch up. I spent most of today glued to my phone and TV: I grew up in Altadena. I no longer have family in the area, but friends. I'm so sad and hoping we have seen the worst of it. Best wishes for any of you in the fire areas or who have family or friends there.

I made my list and added which days I would do which weekly items. I left it with Tuesday’s and the weekend with no tasks (besides regular daily stuff like dishes). Because I had nothing for Tuesday’s, I added the Surface Sweep since it’s fast and easy.
I can see the issue one poster mentioned with having to sort through everything in the bag/box. I use a collapsible tote and put small boxes inside it. That way I can put things for the bedroom in one, kitchen in another, bathroom in another, etc. This way I’m still only carrying one box but at the end, the items are already sorted by the rooms they go to.
