Design Question: Decorating My Room – Need Ideas and Advice!
Hi everyone,
I’m in the process of decorating my room and could really use some help and inspiration. I’m not entirely sure which direction to go in, and I’d love some suggestions from the community!
Here are a few details about the space and what I’m looking for:
1. Large Room: I have a spacious, open-concept room (20x25 feet) with high ceilings. It feels a bit empty right now, and I’m looking for ideas to fill the space without overwhelming it.
2. Current Color Scheme: The room has soft beige walls with white trim, but I’m looking to add some pops of color for a more vibrant feel.
3. Furniture/Items in the Room: I have a queen-sized bed, a wooden dresser, a small desk, and a bookshelf that I’d like to keep, but I’m open to adding a few decorative pieces.
4.Preferred Style: I’m leaning towards a minimalist style with neutral tones, clean lines, and a few cozy, organic elements.
5. Any Specific Challenges: The room is small with limited natural light, so I’m struggling to make it feel brighter and more spacious without overcrowding the space.
I’m looking for advice on:
- Color combinations that would work well together
- Ideas for furniture arrangement
- Creative decor ideas (wall art, lighting, accessories, etc.)
- Any tips on making the space feel cozy or more spacious
Any recommendations, design hacks, or inspiration would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance for your help!
Thank You!
Marie Colvin

Hi Marie! This all sounds so exciting. Our community tends to give the best advice after they've had a chance to read through the design dilemma and look at photos/videos of the space in question. You've nailed the descriptive piece above, but is there any way we can get some visuals of what you're working with?
In the meantime, I made this board for you with some fun color palettes — it includes homes with a beige/neutral base with pops of color throughout. I like blues, greens, and yellows with beige. You'll see some examples in the board 😊

Hi! Thank you so much for the thoughtful response—I really appreciate you taking the time to create that color palette board for me! It’s exactly the kind of inspiration I needed, and I love the combination of blues, greens, and yellows with beige. It’s vibrant but still has that calming, neutral base that I’m going for.
I totally agree that visuals will help in making the right choices for my space, so I’ll make sure to gather some photos and share them soon. I can already tell your community is full of great advice, and I’m excited to get their input once I have everything ready. Thanks again for being so helpful!. Now I’m really excited about the idea in my mind of adding custom neon signs to my bedroom to enhance the vibe for my "me time." I’m a little torn between getting a neon sign with my name or opting for a motivational quote to set the mood.
On one hand, a sign with my name could add a personal, unique touch to the space, and it would definitely create a sense of ownership and warmth. On the other hand, a motivational quote could bring a positive energy and inspiration every time I step into the room—something like “Good Vibes Only” or “Stay Positive” would be so uplifting.
I love the idea of using neon as a fun, playful way to make the space feel more relaxed and inviting. Do you think a personalized name sign would be better for keeping things cozy and intimate, or should I go for the motivational quote to give it that extra dose of positivity and energy? I'm really curious about your thoughts!
Check it out! This is my name in a custom neon sign:
and here's a motivational quotes like “Good Vibes Only” or “Love Yourself”….
I'm about to place my order and I'm stuck between two neon signs. Could you help me decide which one is the best? I'd really appreciate your input!
Thank You!

I say go for your name on the neon sign! It doesn't get much personal than that, and there's something special about knowing this is completely custom to you. The hearts in the font are darling. While the motivational quotes are inspiring and cheerful, I think you can weave that sentiment into your room design in other ways that are less on the nose (like through decor or color). Lean into color psychology and bring in shades that make you feel positive or uplifted. Warm colors like red, orange, yellow, and pink actually have the power to motivate us! Since your palette is more calming with cool tones, I'd recommend mixing in any of these more invigorating colors in small doses (otherwise it can feel a bit overwhelming)
