Help with refreshing Dresser w/ wallpaper

I have a white dresser that I bought from FB Marketplace a few years ago, and I'm looking to give it a new look. After using Google Lens, I found out it's the Kylie dresser from Raymour and Flanigan. Recently, I found a beautiful dark brown side table at a thrift store, and I want to refresh both the dresser and my white Ikea desk to match my room's theme. Since I live in an apartment without outdoor space, I'm considering using peel and stick wallpaper or contact paper on these furniture pieces. I've also heard about gel stains but I'm not sure if they're suitable for an apartment. Has anyone used wallpaper or contact paper on painted wood furniture before? Do I need to sand or prime the furniture first? I also like a cottagecore romantic style but would that be too busy for my small NYC room? Thanks for any advice!

@catandmouse what a beautiful find!!! i would skip the staining in a NYC apartment — it's going to be quite a messy and smelly project, not to mention loud if you need to use an orbital sander to remove the white paint from the dresser (the IKEA desk is likely made from MDF so not stainable).

I love the idea of contact paper or removable wallpaper as a way to refresh! I have not personally used contact paper on furniture before but have applied it to walls, and I think the most important this is that the surface is clean and dry so that the wallpaper can stick (and you don't get any weird bubbles of debris underneath). A burl wood pattern like this one would look beautiful! Knobs are another easy way to refresh the piece without any power tools.

Can't wait to see what you decide!

I haven't done this DIY before, but I just wanted to say how much I love these finds!

such gorgeous finds @catandmouse! I also have never completed a DIY project like this before, but if you wanted to start with something more simple, swapping out the hardware might be a great place to begin! I've found some great options from Zara Home!
