Painting Paneling

I'm getting up the nerve to paint our hallway and our bedroom after that. It's covered in paneling originally put in in the 60's. I'm getting ready to paint it an off-white. Any words of wisdom (do's or don'ts) for a novice panelling painter? All help appreciated!

What kind of texture does the paneling have? Is it smooth and shiny? Raw and rough? I painted over really old paneling in my house and it was a DOOZY, but I'm so happy with the result. It was difficult for me because the paneling was rough and unfinished, so the paint just kept soaking into the wood. If your paneling has any sort of sheen on it, you should sand it down to help the paint stick to it. A coat of primer would also help. When it gets tough, just think of the end result 😄 You got this!

I've painted 4 rooms with paneling in my 1970s ranch house. The most important steps are 1. Clean and lightly sand the surface and 2. Use a bonding primer like Kilz or Gripper. Depending on your particular paneling, you might need 2 coats of both the primer and top coat. Mine came out really well and was a huge improvement. The power of paint!

we also painted our 1970 house of paneling and believe it or not, it was cheaper to just put Sheetrock over it and paint.

Paneling has the grooves so we had to fill in and prime three coats!

We had the Blacksmith Pine color, the darkest espresso you could find with black undertones, a hard dark color to convert:)

I was so lethargic and tired bc too depressed and too dark!! I am so happy we did but again, invest in the 1/4 sheet of sheet rock twice as easy, quicker cheaper and better!!

I didn't mind the grooves. They're not that obvious when they're painted over.

grooves didn’t show that much but ours were hard to cover bc of color.
filling them was just tedious and long but maybe bc we were new at it:))

I am glad we did it but now that paneling is coming back in style, just more colors to select from!

Your room is great !!! A comfy scenery and relaxing:)

Our woodstove saved us tons of electricity and still haven’t used our heaters at 15 degrees:))

Is it wood or is it masonite?

If it is masonite, either tear it out or drywall over it. It's not worth painting.

Same goes for rough wood surfaces. Too much work and too much paint for a mediocre result.

(And if you are pulling it out, do it when your husband is away. Because men love wood, and because it will take him days to notice you did it if you have it tidied up before he returns. — I've been married for 58 years. )
