We have purchased a house and want to do remodeling. The kitchen is almost square 12'9" by 12'5". We would like to put an island or at least someplace to sit and work. We can't figure out where to place it and how big it should be and in what orientation. we want sink under the three windows on the right side. We want to put the cooktop under the window in the back wall and on the left wall we want to put a pantry cabinet, a cabinet depth American refrigerator and a small cabinet whose counter we can use for unloading groceries on the other side of the refrigerator. Is the refrigerator too far away from the sink? We are planning to remove the wall between the kitchen and dining room,
Recreate the space in 3d and try different options there before doing the actual reno. Use the room scan tool if you have iOS. As for the suggestions, I like your ideas, especially removing the wall. And the island might look well in the very middle of the kitchen (one of the options).
Congratulations on your new home!
I know it's very tempting to get the reno out of the way before moving, but in the case of the kitchen it might pay to give it a year and see how the current layout works for you.
That will give you a much clearer idea of what you need done than anything else. You'll know what bothers you and what grows on you, what you need and what you can do without, where to put an island, how big an island you need, even whether an island is actually necessary.
That's a beautiful kitchen, by the way. Gorgeous bones and lots of light.
Wow yes, congrats on the new space! What an exciting phase to be in as well: moving in, planning, dreaming… all the things. I totally agree with @MirandaPriestly on this one. Design takes time, and speaking from experience, that is a very difficult thing to accept at times when you are very excited and ready for change 😅 When I was renovating my home, I went through SO many iterations of what I thought I wanted done, and I'm really grateful I was forced into slowing down before making any permanent changes. Something you might find helpful is drawing out a bubble map of your kitchen. It's used for space planning in design (typically to map out an entire home), but I find it helpful for determining the flow of even just one room. Draw bubbles for each area in the kitchen, and then create arrows to show all the different ways you will move around the kitchen. This, while extremely simple, can help you navigate how you will actually interact in the space. You can also create an actual floor plan online to help you get more granular. You got this!
In regards to the location of sink, cooktop & fridge, connect these 3 items with straight lines, you’ll get a triangle. Each leg of the triangle should not exceed 9’ for optimal workflow. I believe your questions can be solved in one-in-depth conversation. Feel free to book a consultation session with me
