Sharing our 1 bedroom with our 7yo daughter

Hello Apartment Therapists!

We’re renovating a 13’ x 16’ bedroom in our 1-bedroom NYC apartment. My partner and I share this space with our 7-year-old daughter, who currently sleeps with us in our king bed. However, in our new apartment, we want to create a private play space and eventually a spot for her to sleep in her own bed when she’s ready.

We’re considering adding partitions to carve out some privacy for her, especially if she has a friend over. Another option could be building a loft since the apartment has high pre-war ceilings, which might maximize the space.

One challenge is that the room has access to only one window, so we need to ensure the layout works well for light and airflow.

I’ve attached a screenshot of the bedroom layout (note that the closets aren’t in place yet, which adds flexibility) and an example of the space pre-renovation. I'm also including an original video of the bedroom so you can get a feel for what the bedroom is like inside.

Looking forward to your ideas and suggestions—thanks in advance!

Oooh this is a fun one! I would definitely try to utilize some lofted situations because of how high your ceilings are. I actually just watched an episode of Queer Eye (episode 6!), where the mom shared her bedroom with her daughter, and the Fab 5 made it over into a dual-use room with a really cool custom cabinetry divider. You should watch it for some inspiration! You could also consider something like the below, where you partition off an area for your daughter's bedroom with some privacy but keep most of the space open/shared for activities and your area:

If you create a small room to the right of the doorway, and put some opaque plexiglas clerestory windows along the top of the two walls, your daughter will have a private space with closet but some light from the window. A bifold door with opaque glass inserts into this space also lets in light.

A lofted bed that is tall enough to have a desk underneath at one end and a dresser underneath at the other would give her maximum furnishings. A soft lounge chair that folds out to a single bed for a sleepover friend would be a plus.

    Then you add decor!
