We have a very rustic kitchen. Our house is an 1800's log home and we really like the old rustic style( barnwood, distressed etc). We also like the old primitive country style( ex: old coffee grinder). Can't figure out the backsplash. I cannot decide which tile would look better. I do like old primitive country farmhouse style, but also like a darker moody look if it works in the space. I know most will say the black is too dark and the white would make the kitchen look lighter and brighter 2 completely different looks. My daughter loves the black. She thinks the white is boring. I love an old stone wall look, but not finding a faux stone that isn't too busy and none of them work with the countertop. I do like both of theae tiles very much. We do get a fair amount of light in the kitchen. Opinions on tiles? One of these, or keep looking? Thanks in advance.
HI @kathy7532 This is a really interesting question, and it's a great one because your kitchen is beautiful and everything looks really considered. When I look at the white backsplash, it does look like it's blank, like there's something missing, so you're right to focus on it. I would say that keeping the kitchen bright is a good idea. I would not go black. I would not go super dark. Where my head goes with this is a tile, and I think you could look towards more like an Italian tile, which would work with these rustic wooden cabinets. I really think that's the thing that would match these cabinets the best. Let me see if I can find some ideas.
There's a broad range here, but the basic style we're looking at is rustic kitchen farmhouse and Italian kitchen farmhouse. In Italy, they generally rely on tiles for the backsplash, and they can be quite colorful, quite decorative, and quite beautiful. I would urge you to go in a lighter direction. Some of these patterns are quite nice and more on the lighter side, and they will make it feel bigger and reflect more light.
My only concern with looking at italian tiles is that my counter, although quite dark is actually quite busy and a busy tile will not go at all with the counter. Also, the counter in certain light, can have a slightly purplish tone, so true brown, beige, yellowish cream will not go with the counter and I dont care for floral or anything bold(busy). I am wondering if there would be any that would give that old primitive country feel I am going for. Any suggestions of one or two that might go really well?
I agree that if it was a really busy tile, it might not look good. In which case I would go for a light stone look with a little bit more of a natural surface. Let me see if I can find some examples. What do you think of these? I like where this is going.

I like these, but they are yelowish which does not go at all with the counter because in certain light the counter has a purplish brown look to it. I kind of wish something a tad darker would go with the counter. I'm having trouble finding a color other than black or white that actually looks good with the color of the counter. Don't know if you can see how there is a purpish tone in this light.
Okay, I get the problem; then let's go with a bright white stone and just make it a little more interesting. I'm going to throw up a few more interesting pictures, but all of these things would be really easy to source. Even if you just went with some type of interesting subway tile shape, that could work too. I'm looking for brighter, whiter versions. I think maybe my favorite is the bottom one. What do you think?
I have a hard time understanding the counter color - black or dark brown? In either case, while I prefer the dark tiles in theory (I have dark ones, too), I think they will clash or become "too much" with the counters. I'd go with your white option, but hung vertically, as I think that format would suit the space best.
i like all the options. Thanks for all the help. I am going to see if I can order some samples. Another color I think might go would possibly be a handmade look in some sort taupe color. Will get samples.
