Does the checkerboard divider do its job?

I looked at the whole home tour of this New Orleans home after viewing the kitchen makeover. They refer to this as maximalist style and although it is a little more busy-looking than I prefer, it does have a warmth and coziness that is appealing. I like the green color on the wall but for me the white cabinets provide too much contrast. Maybe a wood cabinet and different stone countertop would have been an option, but that's just my personal preference. I think the island was successful but a lot was made of the checkerboard divider to obscure any kitchen messes. I wish some photos showing if it actually did that would have been appreciated.

This is the third time this checker board divider has appeared in Apartment Therapy. What happened to the old comments?

Maybe because I'm a big woman or maybe I just like space, that divider makes the kitchen way too small for me. Love the white cabinets but the dark walls are also not for me. And the heads on the top of the cabinets are so weird, I love them, too.
