Hi
I just moved into my first apartment.. first time I get to pick out furniture and decor. Any suggestions? Im thinking a cream color couch, or dark gray. Im also open to any suggestions for wall art
TIA!
Hi @laura73210! How exciting! Congrats on your first apartment—big move 🎉 What type of design style do you like? Any colors you gravitate toward? If you have any saved inspiration, we'd love to see it to recommend things you'd like
Thank you! Im not really sure.. I hate the color of the walls so something to not make them as noticeable.. my bedroom furniture is dark gray so I was thinking something in that family with a splash of a pretty color... blue.. pink.. light purple. Here are some of the pics I saved
The walls are a beautiful grey, and are a really nice neutral to work with. You can go more monochrome, think charcoal and black, with a nice contrast color to add dimension, or you could go with a nice jewel tone color, like a wine colored, deep purple, or royal blue sofa to really capture the eye (and no one will even notice the grey walls!)
If you don't like the walls color, "own it". By that I mean, it's a perfect background for art and photographs. When we moved into our current house in 2014, we were able to stay at our cabin across the streed. This house, although comfortable, was a cacophony of nightmarish colors, The windows were small and covered with dark olive green curtains, each bedroom was a different bright color, from dark green to orange, yellow and read. I joked that the owner's wife, a self proclaimed decorator bought the bargain Oops colors from Home Depot and it was her revenge since she knew she was leaving him. Since we had the cabin to live in we stayed there for 3 months, storing our furniture in a large container left behind in the back property. I chose Weathered White from Home Depot, not a stark white but with a tinge of grey - I detest beige and brown. We tore down the walls between the kitchen and living room, enlarge the window, painted everything ourselves with the help of 2 grandsons and designed a large kitchen to my liking. The "family room" in the back became our living room, and the living room became our dining room. Kitchen counters black granite. We've amassed a huge art collection and I colect maskes, so I was able, with the help of one grandson, to hang them on the walls. The maskes border the ceiling line, and because I prefer paintings not to be exactly even, we placed them at different heights. It's not to everyone's taste and some friends made remarks, but guess what? It's our house, our taste and we like it. Our previous house was very large and we did the same thing.
A comfy denim couch would look dreamy against that wall color. You could then add pillows, throws, and a small rug in complementary colors. Take your time finding art that speaks to you, even if it is not original. There are some great mass-produced pieces out there. Congratulations on your new place!
Yes thats why I was asking for suggestions:)
Thank you! Those are great ideas!
I like the rug idea thank you!
