Hello, I am a senior and planting in pots on my balcony for a few years now. I am planting cucumbers in a pot. How big of a pot do I need and do I plant in small first and then transplant to a big one? Thank you - CJ
Cucumbers need space to climb, so the pot is going to have to be sizeable to accommodate a support, such as a tomato cage. Don't disturb it once planted, just let it do its thing in the pot.
You're in luck since this is the year of the "patio cucumber"!!! Nearly every single seed company now sells seeds of cucumber varieties that have been specially bred to perform in pots - even indoors in a sunny window!! (But you will still need a small support/trellis.) Some varieties that I've found to perform well in containers are "Spacemaster", "Bush Slicer", "Little Leaf Cucumber", "Quick Snack Hybrid", & "Patio Snacker Hybrid".
