Looking for ideas on how to style my living room with an offset fireplace? I’m a renter, so any suggestions should be renter-friendly. The white shelf above the fireplace is part of the build and cannot be removed. Additionally, the fireplace is on a vaulted ceiling wall, which adds some unique design challenges. I’d love your input on furniture arrangement and decor options to make this space cozy and functional!
That sounds like such a fun challenge! Off-center fireplaces can be tricky, but they also add so much character to a space. Since you’re renting and the white shelf is there to stay, I’d suggest embracing it rather than fighting it maybe use it as a styled focal point with layered art, a mix of decorative objects, or even some greenery to bring in warmth and balance.
For furniture, it really depends on the layout of the rest of the room, but one trick that often works is to "float" your seating area rather than forcing it to center around the fireplace. A cozy arrangement with a sofa facing the fireplace (but not necessarily centered on it) and a pair of chairs or a chaise to balance the asymmetry can make things feel intentional rather than off-kilter. A large area rug will help define the space and anchor everything together.
If the vaulted ceiling makes things feel a bit too tall or empty, consider adding some vertical elements maybe a tall plant, a leaning mirror, or even a floor lamp with some height to visually connect the fireplace to the rest of the room. And if you're open to it, sconces or picture lights above the shelf could add both ambiance and architectural interest without needing to drill anything permanent.
Most importantly, don’t be afraid to embrace the asymmetry! Spaces that feel a little “off” at first often end up looking the most stylish and unique when you lean into their quirks. Would love to hear more about the rest of the room and what kind of vibe you’re going for!
Yesss embrace the quirks of your home! The layout is dependent on how much furniture you're working with (of course). Are you using this room as a living room exclusively, or does it also need to fit a dining table? It looks like your kitchen is adjacent, so I wasn't sure if it needs to serve dual purposes. Looking forward to your response!
Thank you! I was definitely looking at the fireplace location with frustration. Embracing the uniqueness and working from that perspective is definitely a game changer. I took your advice and the decorating process began to be fun and not frustrating!
Thank you for your response! We were debating on where to place a dining room table. We love the open floor to the kitchen! I moved from a high rise studio and brought with me a high top table and chairs that we are using now. However, moving closer to family we will be hosting a monthly Sunday Brunch and would need a bigger table. We decided on a foldable table to bring out for gatherings. I am embracing the uniqueness of the space and looking for a tall back bench against the wall. Attaching a photo of what I think would look nice and a little obsessed trying to find the perfect bench, I LOVE the one in the photo but can’t seem to find it anywhere 🙃
desperately seeking this bench…I love the shape and color
Oooooh you just sent me on a treasure hunt without realizing it 😝 I love looking for stuff like this. I don't think I've come across the exact source, but I did find some similar styles if you want to check this out:
Have you tried setting alerts on FBM for it? Maybe something like "tufted wingback bench" or even simpler "upholstered dining bench" to see if you can find something locally?
