Hello. I'm looking to switch up the look of my basement family room, but I want to avoid knocking down any walls. Would love to hear all your suggestions and ideas!
Hey @dundun1021, happy to help! There is so much potential here. What purpose does the basement family room serve? Is it just for lounging and hanging out, or do you need options for storage and/or guest room potential?
I've got my office over there, but I mostly just use it to hang out.
I would be very tempted to hang curtains from that beam and hide away the space between the curtain and wall, and move all the storage junk there, out of sight. Louver doors would work also, and that would immediately turn the place into a much more calming spot.
I'd try to reorganize the stuff (maybe there are things you don't really need/like any more) and introduce more (new) colors. I'd also recreate the space in 3d and play around with it there before making any changes. Apps like homestyler or planner5d should fit - I prefer the latter and its handy tools like the room scan (iOS). Hope this helps.
Love this idea! I was thinking the same. I would add some tall built-ins to help store a lot of the things you have down there. That way, you have a clean slate and remove the visual clutter. If you added curtains to hide the storage, I would then position the sofa so its back was alongside the curtain divider and have it facing the opposite wall. Then I'd move the desk alongside the wall that currently has all the storage. Reconfiguring this way would also distract from the storage hidden behind the curtains!
If this were my space, I would totally paint the squares on the ceilings in different colors! Such a fun way to add color to this room 🙂 You can even get a feel for the curtain divider look in this photo:
