HELP -how do you create zones in open floor plan?

New apartment and don’t have a lot of furniture. How do you go about creating zones? I’ll put my dining table across from the kitchen. How would you handle furnishing the “two” living areas? I work from home and was going to setup in the second bedroom. Perhaps I should use the area by the door?

I’ve added pictures of my sofa, chairs, tables, and a new rug I ordered so you can see what I have from my old apartment.

Congrats on your new space! When it comes to open floor plans, you can make zones feel intentional by anchoring them with rugs or quite literally using furniture/bookcases as dividers. But before you do that, I would live in your space for a bit and really experience using it/take your time to determine what you want to use the extra space for. You might decide to create a nice entryway area for yourself in the front rather than use that area for a desk (just an example!). Here's a floor plan I whipped up just to get you inspired 😊

I also really love the idea of bookcases as dividers. You could make a little reading nook if that's something you desire!

We are on the same page, that’s how I have my furniture set up but my sofa is too long to have space on both sides and it’s pretty close to the wall to the left.

How did yiu create that floor plan, what software?

I'm so glad you found my reply helpful! The shelves in the photo I shared are from this brand Modern Shelving. IKEA sells something similar that I used in my living room (I wrote an article about it here). I've seen people use them as room dividers too

I made that floor plan in Canva. It's not to scale but it's a quick way to visualize your room if you're in a pinch!
