how do I bring light into a very small studio apartment that has no windows?

  • Take one wall and hang a pair of mirrors...the ones that have a wooden frame around them that depict an arched window. The size, of course, depends on the size of your space. You can also add one or two floor "torche" lamps where the glass shades face upwards…gives a lot of light all around them. I have a patio home with front and back doors (back has sliders), but no windows on the sides. These are a couple things I have done to add light. Good luck and have fun decorating!

Light has to come from somewhere. If you have no way of getting sunlight (no skylights? no windows? no way to cut through walls to "borrow" light from other rooms?), then you simply have to add electric lights, right? No other option.

People have done cool things with light boxes that look like windows mounted on walls. You can use lamps with very bright LED lights instead of regular bulbs and mirrors nearby to bounce electric light around the room. Friends who had a windowless bathroom were able to install a light tube in the ceiling that brought light in from outdoors, bounced down the tube via mirrors and lighting up their small bathroom, but obviously not everyone can make holes in their ceiling to install a tube. Torch lamps are a good idea; they can be very bright (tall standing lamps where the bowl-shaped shade points upwards); In a corner or near a wall they will reflect light around the room as well as upwards. Good luck!
