Bathroom wall treatment

We moved into a 1940's home and the bathroom walls were painted light gray with texture. It looks like they mixed spackle with the paint and maybe used a broad putty knife to apply it. I want to change the walls. How do I do this? I was thinking paint, maybe wallpaper, but how do I get rid of the texture?

I'm dealing with the same thing in my bedroom! I haven't tackled it yet, but you'll want to add a layer of skim coat (a muddy joint compound) to your wall to "fill in" the gaps and texture. Then you'll need to sand it down and repeat until smooth. It's a process, but it's definitely doable!
