I'm planning to redo my living room and want to start fresh with all new furniture and décor. I've attached a photo of how it’s set up right now. The TV is in the corner, and just next to it (which you can see in the 2nd photo) is the front door and entrance to my small house. The wall opposite the largest part of the window is a half-height wall, as there are stairs leading down to the garage on the other side.

I’m wondering if anyone has suggestions for a better layout—specifically, a new position for the TV and couch. I also definitely want to include a large handmade rug, but since the space is small, I’m thinking it will probably need to be light-colored with minimal patterns.

I’m open to suggestions on colors and general décor as well. I really like tan leather couches and am a fan of bright, bold colors. I’d love to hang a large, vibrant painting on the wall where the current artwork is, especially since the room is right next to the entrance and is one of the first things you see when you walk in. But, I’m wondering if that’s the only other spot for the TV???

Any creative ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

I don’t think you need to start over with your furniture unless you want to. You have a clear blank slate of a modern room and your furniture fits that. If I am thinking I want change I usually look at a ton of pictures to get a sense of which way I want to go.

Right now most of what you have is on the right side of your room, leaving it feel unbalanced. Just moving the large urn over to underneath the window will make it feel more balanced. Maybe try the basket with your throws too. And I would try to put the lamp behind the L shape of the sofa. Both your couch and coffee table read heavy. The size of your coffee table is great though. Try looking on marketplace for one about the same size with legs. Something with a sharp modern feel. Maybe not black though. The size of your artwork is great, but it is hung too high. The middle of it should be about 60 inches from the floor. I don’t think your rug fits anything else you have though, in terms of size or decor. But before getting rid of it, try angling it on the same diagonal as the TV. That might work. You really have the start of a lovely room right now.

Hi! I agree with @tigerlillysmom2326 that you have the makings of a lovely room already. I like all its different levels, and it looks clean, modern and uncluttered.

That sofa is a monster, though. I think you've picked the best spot for it in the room; it fits nicely where it is. I actually don't see anywhere else you can put it without blocking windows or entrances. These super-large sofas are not very flexible, so if you do buy something else, I'd recommend going with a straight 3-seater and a pair of chairs, which would give you many more options for arranging the furniture.

Right now, the room is set up something like a movie theater, with the sofa in one corner and the TV in the other. It's nice setting things up on the diagonal; it emphasizes the longest line in the room and it's symmetrical and interesting. But it kind of requires everyone to look at the TV, and I think it might be hard to have a conversation on that sofa. Maybe you can add a chair off the third side of the coffee table (the side where the plant now is) to help break up the "everyone look at the TV" dynamic and add a way to focus back on the couch. I like your coffee table very much, by the way. It's in scale with the current sofa, but it might be too big if you get a more normal-sized one.

Last thing — you say you like bold colors, but there aren't any here! Easy ways to add some: throw pillows, a throw blanket, art on the wall, objects on the coffee table. Maybe a different rug.

I think you've done a great job using the current furniture. Am curious to hear other ideas from people! Good luck, and let us know what you decide to do.
