Help me style/decorate my bookshelf!
Hi everyone!! My name is Hollis, and I'm the Email Manager here at Apartment Therapy.
I recently moved into a new apartment this fall, and one of the last projects I've been meaning to do is to style my bookshelf. It's sort of half-there currently — I'm thinking about adding some sort of dried flowers to the taller section all the way on the right. But I generally can't decide if it's too much stuff or not enough. Let me know what you think and how you might style it!

this is looking really good! some height on top would add some nice variety — what about a lamp? that bottom tall shelf definitely feels made for a tall vase of dried flowers or even maybe a snake plant??

Yes to a tall vase of dried or even faux flowers on that bottom right shelf! It could be nice to add a lovely trinket dish or tray on the top shelf, in whatever shape you like. Scallop is big now, so maybe something like these items, if it's your style!:

I love all the colors coming in from your books! I would definitely something on the right shelf so that the entire bookshelf feels more balanced. Some flowers or a plant like you suggested would look fab!

@Hollis if you wanted to add some height, you might also consider tall taper candles! I love these options from Urban Outfitters that might complement your colorful books.

This would be so fun! If you want to add height to fill that whole tall space, you can always get a taller taper candle holder, OR stack books underneath to raise them up! I like to include some littler books under one or two taper candles so they end up being different heights and add a little more visual interest.
Mixing small art or even family photos within the shelves themselves might also add some more variety too. If your kitchen and/or bar area is close, you could always have a section of pretty glassware!1 -
I think you have a great layout so far, but what it is crying out for is TEXTURE and/or PATTERN. So, a woven basket, dried flowers or plants, a vintage bowl with an interesting glaze or design. A small sculpture with an interesting shape or finish would also add the perfect touch. Lastly, a cool lamp never hurts! The books are looking great, now add the special details that will make it sing! As for about, I am sure you are working on that too - but I suggest a larger and more impactful piece of art, or even a small gallery of various interesting pieces together. You got this!
