"a chair rail should never interrupt or cross the vertical casing" --not quite. in many older homes you will find that the rail ends by being substantially notched into (and overlapping) the vertical casing, this, I understand, is to lend some grace to short runs when you have deep rails.

It's real name is scutigera. if you leave a piece of string tied to the base of your kitchen faucet that reaches your sink drain you may never have to see one again, since that is where they usually get trapped. if you find one in your stuff it is likely hunting for something far pestier than it is, so grow up and shake it out and move on.
