Thanks for the post. I do have a few comments that I'd like to share regarding some of the tips. For instance, join local social networks. It reminds me of the possibility of knowing exactly the kind of people I don't want to meet. There was a gal from work who joins almost every local social networks that I at first intended to join, except that she was not new in town, she was a local. The reason she joined so many? She doesn't have any friends. No one at work wants to hang out with her socially because she is vicious, maybe a psycho (she literally tried to poison a co-worker and put nail on someone's shoe). And everyone who she managed to coax to be her friends within a few months will withdraw their friendships. She must have read blogs about making friends cause she also did other things mentioned in this article, like joining classes, volunteer, etc. It just makes me aware that not only it is harder to meet true friends as one gets older, but you've also exposed yourself to risks of meeting creepy people.
