Shaun Tan, Graeme Base and Janet & Anne Grahame Johnstone come to mind as my favourite, most brilliant children's book illustrators and none made the list, although I did see the first two in the comments. All completely different aesthetics, but the third (sisters?) have been my favourite since childhood and still are to this day. That covers Australia and England (Tan is Australian) but there are also some exquisite books out of Japan and China and I'm certain in the rest of the world as well that could be mentioned. Being as the list is pretty "top forty" I'm not sure that the author has experienced much outside of Coles. The comments hold many more gems that hopefully she will track down.

Any book of Shaun Tan (who also authors most of the books he illustrates) is likely to bring the readers to tears and move them beyond just simply pretty to look at. If one is reading this list to find new additions to their collections, or gifts, he should be at the top of the list.

I would second AND third this comment if I could. I don't understand it's popularity at all. A bowl of mush? Really? It's not even remotely pretty. Must have had some SERIOUS PR backing or something. There are no redeeming qualities as far as I'm concerned, and yet... every... list... ever...
