The coffee shop across from my old apartment in Shanghai had several of these. They were made of cheap, more normal materials, and the coffee shop wasn't fancy - so I can't imagine they would retail for more than $50-$100.

Needless to say, I always ordered coffee served with these machines, mostly because it was so entertaining!

Dai food is my favorite, favorite food of all time! I hope you had pineapple rice to go with those potato balls!

@littlepod I've never seen crullers (油条, I assume?) dipped in anything! Soy milk or zhou sounds like it would be pretty good, though.

When I lived in China, I would have jidan bing (鸡蛋饼) for breakfast almost every morning. I wish I were skilled enough/had the right supplies to make it myself!

Granola! What a great idea! I wish I had thought of that for a bunch potluck I went to a few weeks ago.

Thanks for all the advice, guys! My roommates and I made popovers for family dinner this week. They were amazing, and looked way more awesome than usual (I've always made them in a muffin pan - totally unaware that there was a pan particularly for this purpose). I'll have to look into custards and yorkshire puddings now, because I hate having unitaskers lying around.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I don't have an oven, so some of the suggestions are out, but I ended up using ladrake's idea of persimmon pancakes and had a brunch party with my whole building. It was a good way to use the persimmons, and have a cultural exchange about American breakfasts.

Ariel,

I'm in Shanghai too - I'm guessing you're living in Tonghe?

Anyway, a few of us made s'mores a few days ago using the burners. I would also recommend checking this link out: http://pcchina.wordpress.com/tag/ovenless/
It's for Peace Corp volunteers in China who are trying to figure out the ovenless situation. You can even make steamed cake!
