We won't be hosting, but for meals like this I rely on my oxo peeler, Wusthof knives & all-clad pans... plus, as someone said above, the corkscrew!

As a former elementary education teacher who would make applesauce with her class most years, I can tell you the easiest, most hands-off way is to cook it in a slow cooker or crockpot. Just throw in the cut-up or sliced apples, any seasoning or sugar you'd like, set it on low and check back in a few hours. No worries about burning, etc. I think my mother-in-law, who has two apple trees, almost kissed my feet after I told her this trick; it made her fall applesauce making MUCH, MUCH easier. And who doesn't like a grateful MIL?

I'd play this game with my husband and parents the next time they come to visit because we love food and my parents (and I) love board games.

Interesting food (and plant) fact: Boxelder trees are a kind of maple tree. Therefore you can tap boxelder trees and make syrup from them just like sugar maples! (And my husband did this one spring even!)

I find cutting the bananas up into small pieces before freezing makes it much easier to use them in smoothies or thaw them for banana bread.

And since my freezer isn't big enough to spread them out on a cookie sheet so they can freeze individually instead of in a big clump, I put them in the compartments of an ice cube tray to freeze, then throw 'em in a baggie. It works great!
