The couch is great, where is it from?

Box fan rules.

When our AC unit died in the middle of a heat wave (NYC August), the box fan stuck in the window was enough to let us sleep just fine.

Not to say that if I had central AC I wouldn't have used it. But window units are ugly, inefficient, and noisy, so I felt somewhat relieved when our AC window unit died.

This is pretty amazing.

But, frankly, I wonder why would anybody bother putting this much energy and effort into creating a untenable situation? Two kids in such a small place? I predict movers within a year.

Yes, the apartment is well-edited, but it still feels claustrophobic. The bed is rammed into the bedroom and surrounded by the storage drawers, it's almost like sleeping in a tent. Perhaps the garden helps matters during the nice weather, but I would surely get cabin fever in winter.

Maybe because MSG is not something my family ever cooked with. Or not a kind of food you can find in traditional European cuisine (which heavily influences my cooking), but it never occurred to me to buy it or add it into the food I make.

I own a spoon rest and it's a lot better than a plate (too big) or bowl (the spatulas with long handles tend to tip out of those and fall on the floor making a mess).

But the rest yeah....

Proximity to a grocery store is unimportant to me.

Proximity to a good (which most of the time means small) grocery and farmers market is very important to me.

What good is it to be close to Safeway/Keyfood/Van's or most other huge brands if you cannot even find good (from grass-fed cows/organic) milk in there?

IKEA all the way.

Maybe there are people who can afford to decorate their house with DWR, but for me that's out of the question.

I live in a tiny NYC apartment and boy, do I hate the lack of storage space.

Kitchen is fine. Living room (especially b/c of all the books we own) plus our bikes is hell. Not to mention endless problems of storing necessary but not everyday things like travel suitcases, backpacking and camping gear, etc.

Purging works fine up to a certain point, but beyond that certain point, the living space just becomes too small.

Bag is cool.

But a velcro-closure pocket made out of recycled sweatshirts? For sale? Seriously?

I have a ReadyNas NV and I love it. It's very simple to use (and expand): back-ups are a breeze (which means I actually do them), though I found the bundled software to be too difficult to use.

I've had Misto for a couple of years and while I've never had any clogging problems, because of many small and hard-to-clean parts, it became dirty and nasty and made the oil taste funny.

I don't get all the ikea-hate.

IKEA has terrific deals on sturdy furniture that will serve its duties until it's time to move (and most likely sell most of it simply because it might not fit in the new place).
It doesn't cost a ton of money and doesn't produce emotional attachments, so the furniture is easy to leg go off when it's time to move to another coast/country.

Yes, if you are living in your own (as opposed to rented) place, you are settled down and don't plan to move within the next 10 years, there are more attractive (design-wise) options out there.
