I hate to say this ... but ... if you want to paint it... paint it. If its an improvement your landlord probably wont care (you could always show them the color ahead of time and just ask). Or if you do it... and If they dont like it when you move out... you can just as easily paint it back to white.... they couldnt rightfully charge you for anything if you resolve it.

I would not use the sticky tiles that someone else suggested - over the stove. I believe the heat will melt the adhesive, very slowly and unexpectedly you'll have a vinyl tile fall on your stove when you're not looking... and could be dangerous.

I like the plexi or glass with wallpaper or something behind it.

Make a list of things that you need to do before the next storm: talk to your neighbor about that leaning tree, trim that dead looking branch, etc. make list of things you DIDNT stock up on, and make a plan of how you'll handle this better next time you hear of an approaching storm.

I've been making this for awhile, just like this (but not with so much vanilla). I make this with soymilk. Blending doesnt make it as frothy as I like, sometimes I'll take half of it and put it in a french press and pump it a few times (this is the BEST way to froth milk).

Pro-tip: If you're cracking open a can of pumpkin to make this - alot can go to waste. I take all the leftover pumpkin and put it in an icecube tray and freeze it. It lasts for months. 1 tablespoon fits nicely and so now its dosed perfectly. You can take a cube still frozen and throw it into your milk on the stovetop and it will melt pretty quickly.

I've dealt with this too and NOTHING helped. Bleach, ammonia, tea tree, toothpaste, vinegar, baking soda, peroxide. Probably everything anyone has suggested. You know what I did.... I regrouted. Its easier than you think. And honestly, even if you rent - your landlord would thank you. As long as you dont have expensive tile you're worried about somehow ruining. I did my shower/tub surround which has 2 inch tiles - it took maybe 2 hours total to scrape out the old grout - you're really just scraping out a top layer. And less than an hour to regrout, and a few extra minutes to polish and clean up. I did it over 2 weeknights after work. I wouldnt try it if you had mosaic tiles or something like that - like a 1 inch tile, but anything bigger, is doable. After you regrout you can SEAL your grout and it will look like new for a long while.

I like this. I just installed hardwood floors in my tiny kitchen. I have white cabinets and I've been thinking about what to do with the counters. I've been putting a lot of consideration into white on white (there is a nice white quartz with flecks of shiny quartz in it)- but the grey stone backsplash doesnt do anything for me. Hmmm.

That big kitchen and they have that garbage pail out there like that..! I just bought an in cabinet garbage pail and I LOVE it, But my kitchen is tiny so I needed to hide it

If you dont like it, and its nothing charming or useful or original to the house, why not just close it up. 15 minute job to sheetrock it. I have one of these in the house I moved into, I found it useless so I put a chalkboard over it... also useless, but I like the look of it better than the shelf. I dont like everyone's suggestion to install a mirror in it - that sounds tacky and '80s' to me. If you want to roll with it... paint the inside a different color - either contrast or tonal to your wall color, maybe just hang a framed photo in there and some small (if you can even fit anything) vases with some long reeds or grasses or that sort of thing

You need to do something. Start with the walls - wood paneled walls (even real wood) NEVER looked good. The wood beams and the ceiling are 'a look'. I think if you start with the walls, that might be enough to stop suffocating in wood.

Ikea sells those snap together wooden deck tiles, You might not need TOO many, you can probably get away with just covering the offending area. Not sure how you'd level it to get them to sit flat - perhaps some fine gravel.

Another idea, depending on how handy you are and your access to tools, you can probably make a pretty simple landing, that is a few feet wide and shimmed up precisely.

If you are dead broke and unhandy, and you just want to reduce the trip hazard and the drop-off .... maybe something like a pallet (a European pallet preferrably - they have tighter boards) - or a modified american pallet with some extra boards nailed into it to make it more solid. It sounds ghetto - but I can picture painting it the same tone as the floor, and then tack on a decorative doormat onto it. Lay something underneath, like some rubber grip mats so it stays in place.

Lastly, in all honesty... it looks weird but really is that what is stopping you from using the space? Stick a cafe table or a picnic table out there, maybe an outdoor rug... and once you have some stuff in there I think it stops looking so weird and you'll realize its probably not as big of a problem as you think

Not sure why you try to cut the pit out of the mango. Usually I eat it by shaving off slices until you get to the hard part, holding it how you'd hold a potato you were peeling. Pretty safe and controlled. I wouldnt try to cut it up like an apple and try to core it.

Another good way to do it, that I like is you set up a seperate skype or yahoo IM account you keep on - and have your webcam on. And then you use your normal account to connect, and you grant it permisssions to always automatically accept calls from your normal user account. You can dial in from any computer with skype and maybe even from skype apps on mobile devices.

This tip is terrible because it doesnt work. If there is water in the top portion it will come out when you pour it - in every pitcher I've ever owned. There is no "be careful". I've always enjoyed laughing at/with my girlfriend when I see her impatiently waiting for the pitcher to filter itself because she decided to top it off BEFORE pouring.

I'm surprised to see a half a dozen comments from some 'older' people (sorry - I dont mean that in a bad way) saying "I'm glad I dont have to worry about this anymore". This reminds me of people who say "I've been married for ten years, we don't do anything for Valentines day anymore". Or who choose to wear sweatpants everyday.

I'm young (a sprite 31 years old), but I recognize that these things are MORE important as time goes on. When you're early in a relationship - romance, hugs, kisses, handholding, surprise gifts, and dare I say.... sex... is usually more frequent. So when you get later into the relationship - its just the way things go ... and they become less frequent. But they are never less important. If you are far along in your relationship and you aren't tending to a little intentional romance - you're leaving yourself and you're partner unfulfilled in SOME way. Perhaps he or she might never say it, maybe they wont ever even realize it (maybe you dont realize it), because we're all creatures of habit and tend to get complacent with things. But its still important to keep that fire-a-burning. :)

I'm not a relationship counselor or anything - maybe a more romantic and sentimental guy. But I hope I never get to the point where I feel its unimportant to be putting effort into being romantic, and into doing something simple like making sure your bedroom is a romantic sanctuary.

After reading this post - I cleaned up my bedroom, put up new curtains and am planning a whole bunch other stuff. Great post.

I just bought my first house recently its an old house from 1931, its painted a pale green. I thought I wanted to change it and choose a new color. But when I was talking to neighbors at a garage sale a woman who lived in the neighborhood since she was a child (in the 1950s) said 'the house has always been green' ... so I'm keeping it how it is. I plan to update the trim, but I want to maintain the history of the house. Maybe this doesnt help - but its just my personal house painting story.

This article was mostly about how to insulate and prep heating systems. I'd like to have heard suggestions like picking up some new (or unpacking) some soft cozy throw blankets, and put a couple of extra pillows on the couch, if its an option hang some thicker drapes, stock up on and light some wintry scented candles, bake cookies and make mulled wine.
