I'm a Californian near the fault line and yeah, the open shelving makes me a little nervous too in earthquake country. You could always line that shelving with some drawer liners (to give it that yoga mat effect) --one of my friends did that and her glassware went through a 7 quake just fine. But really, the shakier quakes can also shatter glass windows--can't live life in fear of quakes if you choose to live in SF.

If you're going with the idea that it is unsanitary to keep magazines nearby due to bacteria spewed from a toilet flush, keeping your towels hanging in the bathroom seems ickier than keeping magazines out. Ditto with toothbrushes, hairbrushes, and the like. I'm guessing people may wash their hands when they're done reading and with their business. However, towels tend to be used after the washing: you're just rubbing germy linens all over your supposedly clean hands and body. =)

This is sooo cute!! The chalk dust would annoy me but I love the idea of kids drawing on a chalkboard wall off to the side in the kitchen.

haha--I cracked a smile at bepsf's comment bc if I were her house guest, I would find the instructions she would have left unnecessary. ^_^

Keys aren't hard to figure out--just hard to find. And as far as TV, I no longer watch but I'm alright with figuring out entertainment tech. I would only expect instructions if the owners want me to record anything.

However, I have had trouble finding parking in certain neighborhoods where they regulate parking like crazy bc of overflow--got a parking ticket once for that bc I wanted to avoid carrying my large duffel down a couple blocks. For my own home, I valet-park for guests--some just can't back their car downhill on a narrow twisty drive without bumping trees on one side and a cement wall on the other. It's either that or park at the bottom of the hill and drag their luggage uphill and then downhill for a block (think SF-like inclines).

And while house sitting once, I have spent nearly an hour in a shower playing with knobs trying to get hot water. Got it to work when I adjusted the shower head in JUST the right position and twisted at JUST the right angle. It was still awkward bc I was too tall for it (I'm five-six) and had to hug the right of the tub for water to hit me. Apparently there was another trick for my height when the owner showed me later. And when I shopped for groceries, I apparently went to the more dangerous side of town bc it was closer according to googlemaps.

So...yeah, to all homeowners: house sitters and guests not familiar with your house/area would definitely feel more welcome with any tips if you're not there.

Awesome, awesome post. Probably wouldn't want one of these in my own home but I really like the look of these.

Eh...I like "before" and "after." I think it depends on how the rest of the place looks and what the individual prefers--like everything else. I also like the sound of the butterfryby's idea.

Yeah, I thought the jar in the picture was actually magnetized. No matter, it's still a clever idea.

I STILL find it mind-boggling that you have lived here for only a month. I love the way you display all your stuff and I can tell you're very organized.

Thanks for telling us your paint colors--I LOVE all your choices--especially the brown in the living room (it is brown, isn't it?).

When I saw the bed and the stands, I also immediately thought olive green.

The tips above are great. Here is another one:

Discuss moving your grooming routines out of the bathroom.

I prefer taking my time with my hair and makeup so I kept these accessories out of the bathroom and set up a makeshift vanity in my room (which was a full-length mirror, some lighting, and a storage cart). I kept a spray bottle filled with water in my room to save me a trip to the bathroom if I need water for whatever reason.

plumeria:

That's what I think too. I remember reading somewhere that there is a lot of bacteria floating around in bathrooms. I don't like the idea of these microbes or dust getting onto makeup brushes, cotton balls or q-tips all the time. I put cotton balls and q-tips in closed jars and store in my medicine cabinet. I'm not sure if closed storage is actually better for keeping things cleaner--but it certainly makes me feel better. =)

Wow...this home looks great and sooo comfortable! The living room has such a nice open space. Great place for entertaining comfortably or curling up with a book on any of those sofas.

elvedon: wow, I didn't even think of that until you mentioned it...the butterflies look like they're still fluttering in mid-flight to me. But it's enough of a reminder for me to think twice before going for it.

my little apartment: I have window shades that I suppose can be called "bottom-up" but they also can be pulled down the normal way too. These are great if you have large nearly wall-height windows: allows me to let in light from the bottom and top of my windows but grants me some privacy from nosy neighbors by shading most of the middle.

I also think stainless steel for your backsplash.

Also, this has nothing to do with your question but when I first saw the picture, I immediately imagined a mirror placed somewhere between the top of the stove to the bottom of the hood. I have seen this on an apartment therapy post before and I thought it looked absolutely gorgeous. My friend has a mirror hanging up above her stove too and it looks great.

Mirrors are a lot easier to clean than stainless steel. Just make sure you'd like to see whatever is placed across from the stove.
