I think to say that something that is made from plants is "no better than normal plastic" is a big statement to make. Take into account the short term and long term effects that using petroleum products has on our environment.

While using a trash can liner might make it easier to take out the trash, I survive happily without one. Recyclables and trash are generally dry and I can collect them throughout the week in a trash bin without worrying about the bin getting messy. Compostables (the messy bits) I try to take out every couple of days. This means that the bio-bags generally work for me, though when I do run out of them it isn't much of an issue to take the compost pail out, dump it, and give it a rinse when I get back inside.

Also try re-using your waxed paper milk containers as compost bins. I usually fill it up in a day or two and then I'm using compostable materials I already have in the house to contain my messier compostable items.

You can find kombucha "scoby"s on craigslist in your area from other people that are making their own kombucha. You can also purchase a starter online....

If you can obtain a bottle of the kombucha from a grocery store you can actually "feed" it with sweetened tea and let it sit for a week till a scoby forms.

We had a similar problem with one of our cats. Definitely try different litters, cats can be temper mental about their litter. If your cat likes peeing in the tub it could be that your cat doesn't like the smell of his/her urine. We have a cat that we toilet trained to pee in the toilet. He won't use a litter box now because to him it's not a very sanitary option.

When your cat pees on linens the scent probably goes away faster since you (I assume) immediately wash the soiled cloth. Litter, even when scooped, will still retain some scent....

Produce contains enough salt in it to sustain a human body, there is no need to worry about adding salt to your diet to stay alive. That being said, naturally harvested salt is much better for you than processed salt because naturally harvested salt contains trace minerals that you can benefit from.

I tend to store my herbs in mason jars. I wash the herbs, shake some of the water off-while still leaving them fairly wet- and pack them snugly (but not too tight) into a jar. Close with lid.

I haven't tried this with many herbs but I've had good luck with keeping them around for a week or so with this method. It also doesn't involve paper towels or plastic bags, which is a plus for me.

I have a stainless steel skillet that I make crepes in, without using any fat to cook with.

The trick IS to season it. Your pan won't be beautiful and shiny, but it will certainly be non-stick. I can make crepes in it without having any issues of sticking, I just need to wipe it down with a TINY bit of butter before cooking (wiping once will enable me to cook a whole batch without adding more fat) Treat it like cast iron, don't wash it with soap.

I keep a bucket of 'rinse' water around, which usually stays clean enough for rinsing soapy dishes for a couple of days.

I try to scrape dishes off as soon as possible. I bought a special scraper to do this but you can use a wooden spoon for pots and a rubber spatula for plates and curved pieces.

Then I get a quart sized bowl and use one pump's worth of soap along with some water. I've found that using cold water works just fine and that a pair of washup gloves protects your hands from how cold the water is!

Wash the least dirty dishes first, progressing to the most greasy. I personally use a terrycloth bar-mop towel cut into quarters to wash my dishes. It has enough scrubby power and it can be thrown in the wash every few days.

Dip clean soapy dishes into the 'rinse' water and set up to dry!

With this method I use about a quart of water every time I have to wash dishes, plus a gallon or two every few days for the 'rinse' water

The old spray bottles from the cleaners you no longer want to use will probably have those chemicals leftover in them.

Also, finishing up those cleaners is still going to put hazardous materials in your home. Taking them to a recycling facility will have them disposed of in a hopefully safe way.

Also, it doesn't disappoint me to hear that they are re-selling the cleaners. Most people would probably buy the same thing at full price, so they might as well be able to use your leftovers.

Ideally these types of cleaners would be illegal.

BonAmi is a great choice, it cleans a variety of things and is very earth-friendly.

Seems like Bar Keepers Friend is a little tougher and cause irritation. I would recommend using BonAmi and using the "potato with some baking soda" method for any tough rust stains.

Other cleaners mentioned here are much more toxic than needed to clean something as simple as stainless steel.

Two simple home-made recipes that are non-toxic and work wonders are as follows. Just mix as a paste and buff on, wipe off

2 tablespoons cream of tartar
2 tablespoons baking soda
2 tablespoons 3% hydrogen peroxide
(cream of tartar is a natural bleaching agent and will help to remove stains and produce a lovely shine)

or

1/2 cup baking soda
1 cup club soda

club soda can be used on any shiny surface to produce a streak free shine

You wouldn't build a mac look-alike for it's "divine aesthetics " either. If a person really cared about what their computer looks like they wouldn't build whatever PC version you posted a picture of; it's just plain ugly.

I also really hope that the only perk you could think of for having a Mac is that it's pretty.

I really liked the yellow and probably would have opted to cover the bits of wood showing on the sides of the doors and cabinets. Would have gone nicely with the damask backsplash too.

IKEA corporate doesn't tell the stores how to do their roomsets, so it's all up to the in-house designers to come up with something inspiring.

I know for sure that IKEA Woodbridge commonly uses their products in new and interesting ways and the designers there probably don't need to take ideas from places like IKEA Hacker.

Also, 90% of things posted on IKEA Hacker aren't safe and shouldn't be attempted with the furniture pieces that they're using. Please be aware of what parts of IKEA furniture use the board-on-frame type of construction and plan accordingly.

Bananas are actually much better (tasting and for you) to eat when they're speckled brown on the outside. This means that some of the starches are converting to sugars. These starches can cause stomach aches. Definitely never eat a banana that has any green on it.

Try to leave anything screwed directly in to wood (or particle board) intact; removing screws and reassembling later will significantly weaken your piece of furniture.

If you don't use the steam option you can iron on a table with a towel and a sheet.... But if you use steam you need something to vent all the extra steam out.

Try a mini ironing board or covering your current one with something to make it beautiful; that way it won't bother you if people see it

I moved from DC to San Francisco using FedEx. I was moving out of my parents house and wasn't taking any furniture, it ended up costing about $600 before insurance. This was for about 12 medium sized boxes that I packed myself and bought to a FedEx shipping station

My landlord painted over the kitchen cabinets inside and out before we moved in and now every time we open them it takes a bit of force to get the paint to unstick from itself. We also had to line our cabinets with paper so that our dishes wouldn't stick to the paint.

Anyone have this problem?

Has anyone done research into what other furniture companies do? We're all talking about how IKEA is an evil company, so we should shop somewhere else, but no one talks about WHAT company would be good to shop with.

Crate and Barrel and CB2 use the same type of construction in their products that IKEA does. Read their tags.
