Nooo! I'm going to a Tupperware party on Tuesday night. I don't need to see this temptation! ;-)

Apartment Therapy The Kitchn | Before and After: Dramatic Cupboard Makeover
5/28/09 11:45 PM

We had some family over for a big meal of roast pork followed by apple pie and ice-cream (we're heading into winter down here!). The pie was store bought but I made gravy from scratch! We drank lovely wine and I set the table nicely. No photos. :-(

My kitchen is nice and clean and significantly de-cluttered. There are still a couple of projects I'd like to tackle (really scrubbing up our saucepans comes to mind) but our pantry and fridge are clean and well-stocked, and our "bottom corner" cupboard is finally arranged in a way that continues to be manageable, so I feel happy. :-)

I really appreciated all the links/info provided as the cure progressed, especially the ones about the different flavours from each region of the world. My highlight? The video showing how to dice an onion. I keep thinking that if nothing else, now I know how to correctly dice an onion, and it's a skill I've used almost every day since. :-)

Thanks to everyone at AT The Kitchn.

I already plan our meals too. I've been practicing my knife skills, like dicing onions and garlic. I've also been trying to plan and cook cupboard (and garden!) meals, using things we already have stocked in our cupboard, fridge and freezer and vegies and herbs from our garden. I'm proud of my almost empty cupboards! It's been a good week for the budget too. :-)

Spices! Herbs and spices! I'm all ready to make a soup from scratch, no recipe, just inspiration, and I think I've almost got it down but I've realised I don't know how to season!

The biggest problem I'm facing is keeping my kitchen clean. We use it every day - for meals, to make baby foods, treats and more, so it gets grubby quickly. Time to break out the cleaning vinegar again!

PS Attempted a second stir fry last night and preparing everything precisely ahead of time made a big difference.

:-)

Thank you!

I manage legs and thighs easily enough but always seem to make a hacked up mess of the breast meat. I've watched the video twice and now feel pretty confident for next time.

Cheers!

PS In our house, the chicken "oysters" are called "Nuggets of Gold".

I've just started trying to cook stir-fries at home and now really understand the need for mise en place! Such different prep is necessary compared to that needed to cook long, slow casseroles and stews. :-)

I'm attempting another stir-fry tonight and am going to make sure that I have every last ingredient prepared before heating up the wok. I'll be making good use of my ramekins!

Thanks for the timely advice.

Lovely picture.

I've just spent the last few hours reviewing my two worst cupboards - the ones where I keep appliances, baking equipment, cutting boards, serving dishes and more.

I wish I'd taken before photos - what I thought would be a quick 20 minute job turned into a lot more. I'm proud to say I was ruthless! Everything is now cleaner, better organised and easier to access.

I took a long look at each item and decided to part with anything rusty, flaking, chipped and just plain worn (inspired by one of the links from the previous Kitchen Cure post). It made a lot of space... ;-)

Tackling the bathroom today!

I've already made a list of the bits and pieces I'd like to buy: a ceramic hand soap dispenser to replace the plastic supermarket one, a hook to hang the basin hand towel and some nice bath salts.

Next task on the list is to de-clutter the cabinets before the big clean.

My husband and I visited our city's biggest produce market yesterday. It was our wedding anniversary (any trip out without toddlers can be special). We wandered about looking at all the unusual (to us) vegetables, spices and seafood and came home with some nice cheeses, salami, boxes of apples (husband wants to try making cider) and masses of garlic, root vegies and bananas.

The husband spent last night telling anyone who would listen that my anniversary present was a 10 kg bag of onions...

We use puff pastry to write our children's names on top of any family-size pie we make. It uses up the scraps of pastry and entertains the babies. :-)

I've recently gone vinegar crazy. I mixed vinegar and water together in a spray bottle and now no surface is safe... I love the stuff. Vinegar smell=clean!

Also, my two cents on the oven cleaning issue: baking soda paste, vinegar and elbow grease.

Hi guys,

I hope everyone is enjoying that deep-cleansing high that accompanies a cure...

Compliments to Sara Kate and all of the other bloggers on the frequency and volume of posts, links & information so far! I've really enjoyed sitting down with a coffee this morning and working my way through all the great ideas.

Now I'm off to make some slow cooker stock! :-)

I'm sure I've got some wilted celery, and I've had a chicken carcass in the freezer for a couple of weeks now, just waiting to be made into stock. Today's the day! Thanks for all of the great links!

Wow! I'm already ahead! We went grocery shopping yesterday and everything got a good wipe down before we re-stocked the cupboards.

I'll take a few photos today though to show and tell - promise not to laugh - my cupboards looks like I'm stockpiling cans for the winter! :-(

My fridge and pantry are so full because I'm on holidays and this week and planning on making some baby food and soups to freeze. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!

Apartment Therapy The Kitchn | Kitchen Cure Week #1: Clean Out Fridge and Pantry The Kitchen Cure Spring 2009

How is everyone going?

My motivation kicked in last week and I've been working through my list of jobs pretty steadily for the last few days. When it all gets too much I sit down with my AT book, an Easter egg and a cup of tea! :-)

I did a few things in the kitchen. I washed the tops of the cupboards and my "Display Corningware" (ha ha) and I cleaned the oven (I used bicarb soda, vinegar and elbow grease: there's my 2 cents on that contentious topic).

I cleaned the TV cabinet and the cabinet where we keep our computer and office stuff and my husband even got in on the act, washing down all of our windows, inside and out.

We bought new blinds for the bedroom - previously one window had the original, plastic, mouldy roller blind and the other was bare. Now they are covered in lovely fresh, clean calico romans- so motivating that I cleaned the bedroom from top to bottom this morning. Who knew bed frames could get so dusty? All the bedding is in the dryer as I type (it's rainy here). I can't wait to remake the bed and snuggle up tonight! :-)

Next up it's children's bedrooms (organising toys...groan) and the bathroom.

I'm going well - hope you all are too!

Hi everyone,

I'm Phillippa. I've taken part in The Cure before, the last time about 18 months ago, fueled by pregnancy nesting urges! I'm not feeling particularly motivated right now (recovering from wisdom teeth removal last week-ouch!) but I already have the book and the house could do with a bit of a clean. :-)

I'm setting myself the challenge of doing a deep clean and making a few small changes all for free (or at least for minimal dollars), in line with our current family budget. I'm going old school, writing things down in a notebook - no blog for me, but I might muster up the energy to post a few pictures. ;-)

I live in a tiny old house in coastal NSW with my husband and two rowdy toddlers.

We store things under the sink alongside our regular bin. We group bottles and cans together in a cardboard box if one is floating around. I'm always on the lookout for a permanent tub with the right dimensions whenever I'm out and about.
