I'm starting to think from some of these comments that the tidy folk here wouldn't consider me so tidy? I certainly don't equate "tidy" with "immaculate." To me, "tidy" means mostly neat but functional. It's okay to leave the breakfast dishes out when you're at work because you prefer to wash them at night. If you're a reader, sure, books left around the house are okay and cozy.

What's not tidy to me is having stuff everywhere with no place to really live.

Thanks for this thoughtful post.

I am perceived universally as a tidy AND clean person. I also work long hours and resent spending time cleaning and tidying that could better be spent doing anything else that is more rewarding -- which is pretty much everything you could think of.

I don't quite agree with the whole post, but see something familiar in point number 1. I have way less stuff than most people I know through a regular commitment to culling. No, not "one in, one out" (which I find crazy), but through regular cleaning out that correlates to current realities (size of apartment, e.g.). So, if you want to be tidy, I would agree that a major component is to simply have less.

In general terms, I would describe the "secret" as setting yourself up for success. I do spend some energy in each apartment figuring out how to make it work. If cleaning is going to be a pain in the a$$, I won't do it. So, I make changes. If they aren't working, I try again. If they never work, I concede defeat and find a middle ground. Example? Folding fitted sheets. I know how to do it properly, but it takes too much time and is never quite rewarding enough. After all, they're just sheets hanging around and waiting to be used in another way. So, I bundle them up and throw them into bins that sit in the linen closet. Works for me.

I was thinking of just letting the couch jut out a bit from the kitchen divider wall, but of course you've already tried this and rejected it for good reason. In any case, having a couch to flop on -- slanted wall and all -- is worth it!

Favorite! Well done.

I wonder what would happen if you turned the couch so that its back is toward the kitchen, along the cabinets and sink? More head room for all?

Michael -- what a lovely, tiny space. Would you share source info for your sofa? (That would match my kilim that looks . . . almost identical to yours.)

Second the vote for bathroom pics.

Love!

I vote for a full tour, which, although it might seem silly at this size, would show us how all the pieces fit together.

I want this beauty, true, but I would give it to my mother who hasn't bought a decent knife . . . ever.

I just have to say to repressed: as a transplant to Missouri from the west coast, I am *thrilled* to be part of the "North". Some will understand.

Late to the party but have ordered the AT book and started path-clearing. My challenges are money and access. I can purge, but I'm not sure much can be added - even if I had extra cash to add things, I live in the tiny town from Footloose. Let the creativity begin!
