Adobe Illustrator. Get it however, but the advantage here is that it does more than one thing! If you're going to invest time into learning software it should be useful more than once in your life.

I've got variations of each room separated onto layers, labeled objects within those layers...1 pixel = 1 inch.

Photoshop could work too. But Illustrator is better for working with "vector" shapes.

I guess those aren't "inset" though....but c'mon, what's that? two inches? If you're fighting for two inches you should probably be looking for a smaller bed....or you could just get a low and ugly bed frame (on wheels or whatever) and get a clean looking skirt. I stayed at the Paramount by Philippe Stark and there was a nice low thing going on...couldn't have been more than 12 inches total:

I was checking out the futon bed links from above...this one seems decently simple and low, great price and customizable solid wood options (bamboo, maple etc.), and for those who are handy it would be very easy to chop down the height if desired.

I would say to ask somebody. If they don't do it themselves, they may know a hobbyist. The idea, I think, is that getting good at "powder coating" or whatever is something that takes time, so for them to recoup some cost on their education is helpful. Don't quote me on that, but in the end it never hurts to ask!
