I admit it... I"m biased! Love this house, but it was the dining room that drew me in because, well, it looks like MY dining room (to a degree!) Though rather than elect an actual Saarinen tulip table, we went with a cheap Ikea Doksta. Like you, we collected a set of 4 midcentury teak/walnut chairs w/ black vinyl that look stunning against the white sleek table. <3

In my experience, old vanities clean up very well with a nice dose of paint and new hardware. Don't just slab on the paint, however! Check out video tutorials to strip the old cabinet and doors, apply paint or varnish and be pleased with the outcome.

Also, I always check Overstock.com for faucet and lighting fixtures! I've saved hundreds of bucks on Euro brand items thx to them :)

5 Places To Skimp On Your Bathroom Reno

I love the reno and the fact that the space now works for this family- the finishes and fixtures are spot on! But that old archway, despite how dark and imposing it may have been, lent a unique architectural vibe to the room that is seldom seen anymore. As someone else suggested, I would have been inclined to keep it and perhaps paint it white to brighten the space... yes, at the peril of having the open floor plan. But doesn't matter what I think... glad that the owner loves the new space!

I agree with the person who proposed countering brown walls with white: white wall tiles half-way up the wall, fixtures, flooring and vanity.
I would also suggest another cosmetic fix to this dated bathroom- paint the vanity if you don't plan on replacing it! I did this in all 3 of my bathrooms which had oak vanities that were anything but fresh and modern. After researching how to paint them properly, it took very little time. I also added new hardware and they all looked new.

So, if you go for brown walls, do white elsewhere- vanity and countertop/sink, floors, etc.

So cozy yet fresh and airy! I love how the owners weren't afraid to juxtapose midcentury and modern pieces within the context of a 200+ yr old farm house... LOVE IT!

No better family retreat could there be! It is visually stunning. More than this, it is clear that it offers a true respite to the family- an emotional sanctuary like no other. Thanks for sharing :)

*APPLAUSE*!!! Love this home and love the decor they have carefully chosen. For such a gem of a midcentury modern, it would be easy to do 'all the usual suspects' (Eames chairs galore). Instead, they chose a nice, eclectic sampling and combined it all with lovely, diverse textures on the walls and floors. Love!

I wouldn't worry about them falling down on the cars if you've installed the rails properly! :)

In our tandem garage (2 car garage, back to back), this would be great and the BEST PART OF THIS: NO WORRIES ABOUT WATER DAMAGE from flooding, broken water heaters or washers, etc!
Cheers for the idea!

As someone w/ shiny white laminate floors in our kitchen (IKEA), it's true- they show every last crumb, dog hair and scuff mark imaginable! That said, I do love the look. I'm unsure how long white paint with last in comparison to our shiny laminate- at least I can wet Swiffer ours regularly... and do I do it regularly! Looks great, but isn't the most practical :(

Great choice! As a kid, I grew up vacationing on the beaches of Florida where our family had a little spot with green-painted kitchen cabinets like these! It was so refreshing and reinvigorating to the soul to enter that kitchen each morning!

Combining it with white cabinetry as the owners above did, it looks superb!

Great stuff.... for some time now, I've been trying to decipher a way to showcase hundreds of photos on a wall without framing them all- I was thinking a very nice, clear plexi-glass may work but need some inspiration!

Great write-up!

There are pro's and con's to them all, but I must say that a big 'CON' under Granite is my opinion is it's near ubiquity in many new and remodeled homes. It's intrinsic value is one thing, but most people seem to blindly believe it is superior based upon the judgments of everyone around them. Granite can be nice, but personally I'd rather not follow the sheeple....

As a child of the 70s/80s, anything my parents have parted with has been anything but mourned... anyone want to purchase some rattan tables or brass tv rolling carts? :D :D

Great use of various 'storage' pieces throughout the home! I especially love the idea of using the Ikea cubby shelves w/ wicker baskets to store and display alcohol and wine. Lots of great items from 'box' stores (ie Lowes, Ikea) that anyone can do w/ a little inspiration and thought!

As a motorcyclist myself, I too have a fair share of misc bike parts around our abode. That said, I have not brought in an entire bike due to the 'smell factor'. Bikes (that are being used in any capacity) smell of the lovely fragrances of oil, gasoline and rubber- not exactly the aroma's you want in your home. If you have an old bike completely drained of its liquids and never to be used, go for it. If not, you'll be sorry.

Oh- and PLEASE don't have bike stuff if you/your spouse/your parent doesn't/didn't ride. That's called posing ;)

The host of designyourwall contact papers are so enticing and I am glad to hear your experience with it was so positive and easy!

That said, at $65 for a 4ft roll, it's a pricey alternative to paint/wallpaper! Thanks for sharing :)

If there was ever a place on ApartmentTherapy that reminded me more of my own home, this is it... only even cooler! We've incorporated a lot of things that you have (turquoise walls, midcentury pieces, Ikea kitchen w/ glass on top cabinets!) but you've done it tastefully and more dramatically. I'm inspired to give my place a refresh now!

Side note, I love the use of the glass cupboards hung on the wall in the office!
And the tiki masks... MOST EXCELLENT GUYS!

This is great and I'm only now catching it on the 2010 Kitchen remodel round-up!
As an FYI, we used the same cabinets as seen in this photo (#3, jason's midcentury)... it is NOT the Solar beech, though close! It's actually the Ikea NEXUS YELLOW/BROWN :) The last we were at Ikea, they were going on clearance so I believe they've been phased out :(
