how about just using dressers? i painted a pair that have been in my family since the 50's, added new knobs from anthropologie (they cost a bit less than $1,000!) and voila - large bedside tables that are just the right height and store pajamas, socks, everything. plenty of room for a lamp, tissue box, flowers, a few books.
