It has to be fake. The cube spins. In college, it was one of our 'things' that when we went into the city and walked down 8th Street and Broadway on shopping trips and to get haircuts and such, we walked through the Astor Place, and we spun the cube. People don't do it as much as they used to in the 80s, but it's part of the artwork that you can get a few people to grab hold and spin it.
