@LolaDanger: Hahaha. Spot on. I loathe Irvine. Well, I pretty much dislike most of Orange County (though I went to college there). But of all the O.C. cities, Irvine is definitely the one I try to avoid the most.

@arcane: I get that you want to live in Irvine because it's quiet, but I think there are plenty of equally quiet neighborhoods in O.C. that aren't as expensive as Irvine (they're not exactly cheap either, though) and offer way more diversity. But I'm a firm believer in not disparaging something before you've even tried it, so I hope you fulfill your desire to move there. Maybe you'll like it.

Thankfully, I haven't had to make a long distance move. Well, I suppose San Diego to San Francisco is no quick trip, but it's certainly not 1200 miles or cross country.

Anyway, I wanted to add that your having opted to bring your belongs to the ABF facility versus having them drop off a Relo-Cube was probably the best idea in the end. I realize your Brooklyn neighborhood couldn't accommodate a drop off, but that's a good thing because you want your items to only have to travel from point A to point B, rather than A to B to C. Granted, a drop off makes the work of moving less physical because you're not having to pack twice (home to U-Haul to Relo-Cube), but the less jostling and disturbance (at the hands of complete strangers combined with road conditions), the better.

Aww, I love hearing great customer service stories like this. The clock is great in its simplicity. Very nice.

For what it's worth, I think it's a good thing to write reviews — positive and negative. As a consumer (primarily an online consumer at that), I rely heavily on reviews. So good or bad, it helps me in my decision-making process to read others' feedback on a product/retailer. Just somethin’ to think about is all.

These are all helpful tips, as I've been contemplating putting my 1 bedroom apartment up on Airbnb. I've used Airbnb a few times myself, and I love it. I would add this to the list:

Be available — in person or by phone — or designate someone who can be if you can't: Your guests might have questions that only you can answer. It's great when you or someone you designate as manager can be reached easily to answer those questions.

On one occasion, I wanted to use one of the bicycles on the property, but I needed the combination to the lock. I called the home owner, but she wasn't there (she also lived 3000 miles away). The person she designated as property manager lived nearby, but was out cherry picking for the day, so I got voicemail. By the time my call was returned, I had already decided to walk.

@thegoldstate - I get where you're coming from. A commenter or two might have interpreted your earlier remark about the cost of the vacuum as b_tching and moaning, but I get it. Look, can I afford a $400+ vacuum? Sure. But do I want to shell out $400+ for a vacuum? Nope. And trust me, that Dyson DC26 vac looks mighty sexy (me wants). But I'm not suffering from crazy allergies. And yeah, the many MANY balls of cat hair are upsetting, but not $400+ worth upsetting. I'd rather spend that on a nice weekend in Napa.

Oh, and my favorite appliance is totally my Sanyo rice cooker. Love that emeffer somethin' fierce.

Very awesome room! Before I read the details, I assumed the boys were triplets. Two years apart each isn't much of a gap, I know, but I wonder how long term this setup is. Eventually the oldest is going to want some "me-time" (and no, I don't mean that but I also don't not mean that). But that aside, the space is magnificent, even though they stole my future-kid's Dumbo motif ; )

Wait, a Tootsie Roll is punishment?! I'm sorry but Tootsie Rolls are all shades of awesome.* You want "punishment candy" for Halloween, go Raisinets or candy corn. Yeah, I just said candy corn. That's your punishment candy right there.

*Exception given to the fruit-flavored Tootsie Rolls. I just shut my eyes and pretend they don't exist.

I second Nephthys's suggestion to try overstock.com, but beware that the more brightly colored sheets tend to be of a lower thread count (for me, anything <800tc is a potential deal breaker). Also try retailers (online and in store) that carry Marimekko.

@lurker2209: I was in the process of researching ways to jazz up my existing headboard, and stumbled on a really great online tutorial of how to make your own headboard. Problem is I can't find it right now. But yes, you do use plywood. Here's an old AT post on building your own headboard. If I'm able to track down that video, I'll definitely post it here.
