Thanks! That makes sense.

Jennifer's High-Low Mix in Boston House Tour

Cute place, but I have to ask: WHY the single (and narrow) curtain panels knotted in the middle? I see this done quite a lot, and it just doesn't make sense to me. I must be missing something.

DIY Idea: Hand Dyed Shibori Tablecloth House of Earnest

@sarawelder - while I enjoy a pretty presentation, I agree that some of these are over the top and not in keeping with the spirit of the holiday. I especially dislike using seasonal foods as decor (turnip candleholder and the like) that render something once edible useless for actual consumption. I more than dislike that, actually. It sickens me. It is a slap in the face to those who don't have enough to eat, for sure.

Great look, but I definitely agree with the addition of a backing to protect the table and also lend some heft and stability to the trivet. I would also worry about staining the suede, as my family cannot seem to ladle or spoon anything out of a serving dish without sloshing it all down the sides. Is there a faux-leather material out there that is heat resistant? Thanks for the inspiration, Dabney!

Funny that this post has garnered so little attention. I came back hoping for more ideas, because that Plumen bought? Horrid. The light it casts is just awful in my dining room. I miss my 6 incandescent chandelier bulbs, but I'm committed to using something more efficient in a fixture that is almost always lit. So. Help? Any ideas for warming or brightening CFL lighting? Anyone wanna buy a plumen at half off retail?

I wanted to add some coziness to my spare dining room, so much to my husband's dismay I picked up an old, smallish camelback Chippendale sofa on CL for $20, added BIG casters (to raise it to dining height) and a dyed drop cloth slipcover (er, throw...I did NOT tailor it a bit) and rolled it up next to the table. It's heavenly, though totally impractical!

Thanks for your concern. Not all brands are created equal. The pastel chalks I use are from Sargent, geared toward children and are certified non-toxic.

I'm disappointed in the lack of energy efficient options. I just bought the Plumen, which is nice enough (and HUGE, btw), but I'm left wanting. There just isn't much out there.

Echo previous commenters' sentiments about this not being particularly original. It doesn't take a great deal of talent to do what's been done here - all you've got to do is spend a little time on popular design blogs. That's not to say that I assume Ms. Moore is talentless - it just isn't apparent here.

In response to the chalkboard wall hate: my kitchen walls are done in black chalkboard paint, and I actually agree that it is totally overdone. Not only that, It's a terrible mess -chalk dust everywhere, bits of chalk strewn across the floor...and god forbid you should accidentally brush up against the wall! Oh my. It also happens to be SO. MUCH. FUN. A year ago, we ditched the while school chalk in favor of richly-hued artist chalks and we'll never go back. Kids' artwork, sweet messages, important reminders...it's all there in full color.

10 Unconventional Ways to Hang Art

Absolutely LOVE the current interiors and how surprisingly little stylistic difference there is between the old and the new. The current decor, while definitely gussied up and more layered, is also totally timeless and charming. It feels so much like the house decorated itself, if that makes any sense. Original owners would surely approve, though it would be great to see that second bathroom stripped of the 1960's tile and vanity - that room is a little disappointing compared to the rest:)

Please, convince your Aunt to offer up a full-on house tour with lots of details about what she's changed and what has stayed the same!

We bought our house from my mom, who bought it from the second owners since the place was built in the 1940's. There used to be photos around of the exterior and beautiful backyard, but somehow they've been lost. Keep hoping I'll find them tucked away someday, because I really want to re-create the landscaping. There was even a photo of the original owners enjoying backyard barbecue, the Mrs. decked out in red lipstick, pearls and a very prim summer day dress, holding a pair of tongs! It was taken from the very spot I sit now on the slate patio. Sigh.

I'll agree that it looks a little institutional. A few brightly colored objects or textiles would go a long way.

To the commenters calling this discussion shallow: you're hanging out on a design website, no? This topic is tailored to people interested in, even passionate about, design. I don't see how desiring that our mates' tastes mesh well with our own is any more shallow than, say, an avid outdoorsman desiring that his potential mate like to camp, or a film buff preferring that her lover enjoy "good" cinema. This is our hobby, sometimes our livelihood. Desiring to share it and collaborate harmoniously with, or at least not be impeded by, our partner is nothing to be ashamed of!

My husband's bachelor pad initially terrified me - minimalist, mid-century modern, super clean with white walls. I remember thinking to myself "this will never work". I lived in a colorful old house full of antiques, dust and dog hair.

It DID work, though. I learned that I actually loved midcentury design and that it paired very nicely with primitive and time-worn wooden furniture. Also, it turns out it was only super-clean because he had only recently moved in (not that he's a slob now, just not the persnickety neat nick I had imagined) and the fact that his digs read "minimalist" to me had more to do with a lack of funds or desire to decorate than an adherance to a design aesthetic. The very best discovery of all? He's COLORBLIND! We've never had a disagreement about paint colors:)

Reminds me of those "flower beds" people put up - an old bed frame sunk into the ground with annuals planted inside. Ugh. No thanks.

Wish I could find an inexpensive source for these. Been looking for years, but I just can't spend upwards of $40 on a towel. Just not in that income bracket yet. Maybe when the kids grow up and I'll only have to buy a couple?

Broken toilet set in the main bath. one of the bolts is missing so that the seat slides to the side as you sit down. On the bright side, it makes cleaning those little crannies around the seat much easier.

I have four girls that currently sleep 2/room. I've been trying to convince them to all bunk together so that I can set up the additional room as an office/playroom/art room for them, but nobody's interested. Sigh.
