Fantastic idea. I'd have chosen a different finish myself, but thats a matter of taste. Got me wondering what rectangular materials I could use for a similar look.

I don't visit or comment much anymore, since AT went over-the-top with deleting dissenting opinions. Mind you, I didn't often write those sort of comments, but I liked that they were there. Eliminating them has cheapened the site for me, and I'm sure I'm not the only reader losing interest. Shame.

Anybody have any experience with the plastic ikea shoe bins? They look handy, but are the durable?

Free Up Floor Space by Hanging Baskets and Buckets on The Wall

We just hung two sheets of pegboard, added trim and painted them to match the walls in our tiny entryway. That, along with individual cubbies on a smaller wall and one good-sized basket on the floor for mittens, hats and scarves seems to be keeping the clutter at bay. There are seven of us, so that's no small feat! I did paint the ENTIRE area the same, dark color - cubbies, trim, doors, walls and all. That made a big difference as well.

The kids take their shoes off outside the door (covered patio) and stash them in a big ol' primitive cupboard with added shelving for maximum storage. I wish I had room for a bench indoors, though.

Already bought the paint I need to do this to my kitchen floors. Yup. Kitchen. In a house with five kids and a dog. Possibly a stupid idea, but I figured we'd give this a try before shelling out a bunch of cash for tile, and having to make a huge commitment. The existing floors are fir (not a hardwood), and do not match the oak in the rest of the house so I don't consider refinishing them to be worth the money and effort.

Very cool, though it's funny to think that in ten or twenty years the thrift stores will be loaded with furniture sporting funny paint jobs and the new "before and after" posts will feature lots of stripped and refinished wood. This is joy a dig - I'm all for customizing furniture. I just don't see permanence in this trend.

With 7 milk drinkers in put family, we'd have enough jugs for an igloo within a couple of months:)

But who has room for something like that indoors? And how sturdy is it, really?

Thanks, thebeththomas, for correcting folks on the proper terminology. I wasn't sure how I was going to mention it without sounding like a know-it-all;)

In any case, I agree with the comments about the muntins and the plant and the tablecloth and the little stove. That said, this is a definite improvement. And if the house will soon be on the market, it's probably best to be cautious and neutral, even erring on the side of dull.

Before & After: From 1991 to 21st Century Dining Room

Could you put.a loveseat across from the fireplace without impeding traffic to the dining room? If so, I'd go that route, and then add a round coffee table in front of it and a pair of upholstered chairs (club or wing) on either side of the fireplace.

We have a long, narrow dining table with a bench on one side, stools on the other and Windsor chairs on the ends. I love the setup, as it can accommodate our large family without looking too crowded and makes cleaning a breeze (slide the bench over and stack the stools to vaccum). Also, it was an economical choice - a set of six dining chairs in a design that I could live with were way beyond our means.

Comfort-wise, we're happy with the arrangement, though when in-laws and other guests visit they are offered the chairs at the ends.

A shop nearby sells beautiful hand screened wrapping paper that I've been wishing I had a use for - it's just too pretty to put tape on it, and is somewhat expensive. I'd love to use it as a table runner, but I wonder if it could be sealed somehow so that it won't get messy and have to be thrown out after a meal? Does anyone know what I might be able to paint on the surface?

netslaveone - really good tip that I probably wouldn't have thought of - an un-warmed CFL is irritating.

I usually find myself sweeping in the minutes before guests arrive. For some reason, no matter how recently I cleaned the floors there's always debris in the kitchen and entryway. That and straightening out the chairs. My kids are constantly moving them around.

I second Honore's suggestion to replace the empty frame with a mirror. A round one would be especially cool.

Cheerful and clean. Love that it looks modern without the sterility that seems popular in kitchens these days. This is actually totally different from anything I would do, but I envy your talent in creating this space - my own kitchen decor skills are embarrassing.
