Eh, delicacy or not, the tomalley is now on the list of things not to eat. (FDA says "No recommended consumption") It's the liver and pancreas, and collects contaminants from the environment, including toxins from the same algae that cause red tide, and heavy metals like mercury. Whoopie pies are trendy now? Huh. Despite the username, I'm living in Maine now, and you find them in every convenience store and pizza shop! My mother-in-law made fancy-flavored mini-whoopies for our wedding instead of cake! Four versions: Kahlua, Maker's Mark and Blueberry, Gran Marnier with candied orange peel, and rum with toasted coconut. They were a huge hit! What else could I put in these besides walnuts and cocoa nibs? I'm super allergic to nuts, and all nibs I've ever seen have been of the "processed with nuts" variety. It makes my husband crazy that I go off and leave our whistle-less teapot heating on the burner unsupervised - I think he's afraid I'm going to let it boil dry. I love the Cook's Illustrated version, though it takes some thinking ahead. Don't have the recipe handy, but it involves zesting limes and lemons and letting the zest marinate in the juice/tequila/triple sec overnight. Oh, and a touch of sugar. I got around to making this tonight, with one significant change: I was almost out of milk, so used half 1% milk and half cream - and for those of you who are squicking out about the possible curdiness of the sauce, that's key! I make soup when I need a "be kind to yourself" meal, whether I'm stressed or getting sick, or just feeling blue. And it's the process as much as the end result. I find chopping vegetables is very soothing, and as it's simmering on the stove it makes the house smell great! Oh, man, I am so excited! I developed a nut and peanut allergy a few years ago, so a lot of cookies are now right out, including girl scout cookies.
