I would put a large, dark-framed, traditional mirror in there, to enhance the style of the house. If you use a dark colour, it will contrast with the wall and molding and be the focal point, which is what you want.

And since you need light, find a matching pair of lamps for either side of the fireplace.

The natural oak handrails match the floor nicely. Warm cream, mocha or even chocolate on the walls if you want drama. Painting spindles is a PAIN!

I had the same problem! I tried watering with soapy water, and spraying the surface of the soil with Safer's, but nothing worked.

I eventually took them all out of the soil and am growing them hydroponically. It has elliminated the gnats, but it was alot of work.

The plants will go back into pots of soil for the summer when they go outside, but I will probably put them back in plain water if and when I bring them back in for the winter again.

Paint the cabinets white because it will blend with the appliances better. I think a rich color on the walls will be a better way to add interest. That way, if you decide you don't like the color, at least all you have to paint is a couple of walls and you don't have to go through all the work of painting the cabinets again... or replacing them.

It's truly wonderful.
I love the bright green accent color, it keeps it from being too "period" but accents the m/c mod look nicely.
Still...I can almost hear Sammy Davis Jr. and Dean Martin singing on the tv....

I like the texture of the brick wall and peeling paint ... but not the scribbles on it.

I'm not a fan of ordinary graffitti, I prefer something more artistic, as azure has pointed out.

As a Canadian, I get frustrated by American mags because we cannot access sources easily. I don't really CARE if Chocolat is a similar format to Domino or not. I like them both, but knowing that I can purchase something I see in a mag is worth the price of buying Chocolat alone....
