My dull Dell would be much improved by the fancy digs.

The gritty little mess right by the door. When you try to sweep it up, some inevitably ends up under the metal threshold.

How old is old? If your new one is replacing a 20-year old model, I would expect it to be a lot more efficient. But what about a 5 or 6 year old model?

What makes wood so frickin' sacred to some people? Is there some constitutional right I'm unaware of allowing all wood to go uncovered?

If you love stained wood with beautiful grain, fantastic, surround yourself with it. But nothing so cute, well used, and (I'm assuming) well loved can fairly be described as a "waste" or a "crime" or "stupid" or a "shame" or a "travesty" or a "tragedy" or "ignorant".

Calm down, people. I, for one, have no particular fondness for wood grain, but I don't think it should be banished from other people's homes or that a piece with nice lines and wood grain is a waste even if the owner adores it.

I realized I'd gotten it wrong when I read the Jonathan Adler lighting post earlier today. A few clicks later and I saw the chadelier in his collection.

In defense of all of us who said '70s, this room never should have happened after 1977.

The Gropius house is a great place to visit. The thing that most amazed me about it was the degree to which I could imagine living in just that sort of place. The scale, the furniture, everything is very accessible. It's a sign of just how successful they were in shaping modern design and architecture now.

Also, the excellent DeCordova museum is just down the street.

I love Stuff White People Like. Meaning, it's a good blog. But the other sense is also true. I am white and they've pretty much got me down.

I liked #2 the least in the little pictures, but upon closer inspection in the larger photos, #2 is my favorite because of the nice details you mentioned.

#3 is also lovely. #1 is slightly dull by comparison.

I love your wall color.

None of these items is too terribly awful individually. But as an overall style, it's a little 1980s Sloane Ranger/Preppy for my taste.

I also think the plastic version feels flimsy and cheap. The "school cafeteria" feel of the fiberglass is actually one of the things I like about that version - it feels nostalgic.

That said, it's kind of apples and oranges and you truly need to sit in both to find out which you prefer. Even if it takes some looking around (although I couldn't tell you where), promise yourlsef you won't buy one or the other until you've tried both.

I would focus on learning to live with imperfection. If your unhappiness with the new carpet really has meant a loss of the one thing that gave you satisfaction and joy, then you may have an issue that runs a bit deeper than a distaste for ugly flooring. I think it's safe to assume that the friends you so enjoy entertaining come over for good company, not to judge your carpets.

They walk in the door and you say with a laugh and a sigh "ugh, can you believe the horrible carpeting that the landlord forced upon me??" Everyone sympathizes for a moment, then you move on to the fun. The elephant in the room has been dealt with and you've distanced yourself from the bad taste.

Good luck.
