This is so cool! I love stuff like this. ...I really want to sift through those piles of junk too! I bet you'd find all kinds of treasures!

i bought this book last fall. So this is really my first season using it and I really like it so far. I especially love the alcohol infusions. I had this book in time to use local fall apples to make the appled brandy. It was so good and such a hit for gifts at Christmas time.

I've made yogurt a few times without a maker. I could never quite get the right consistency when I made it in larger jars. It did come out perfect when I let the yogurt set up in half-pint mason jars, for some reason. Although it feels like a lot of trouble with multiple jars. I've been wanting to make a batch of yogurt, but I keep thinking, "ohh I don't want to pull out all those jars and crap and set everything up".....so whiny, I know. :)
I've been thinking maybe a yogurt maker will make it seem like a less-involved process so that I'll do it more often.

We have the same problem! It drives me crazy and makes me feel like we are gross or dirty people... We just bought the hydro right dual toilet flusher thing. It's supposed to be an easy retrofit to any toilet, but we haven't installed it yet. It puts a new flushing button on the outside of the tank that enables you to use a single flush for "number 1" and a double flush for "number 2". I'm hoping this helps. Although we'll still try and see if we can let it "mellow" for two or three times...

I had the dandruff and itchy scalp at first when I tried too. I heard somewhere that overly oily hair can irritate your scalp and cause the itch and dandruff. My hair was still oily (this was during my beginning/transition phase). Now that I've kept up with it. That dandruff, itchiness, and excess oil has subsided. I only "clean" my hair like twice a week or so and I love it! So much cheaper than the fancy hair products I was buying. My hair feels great. Plus, it is naturally more pliable so I rarely use styling product.

It is definitely something you need to suck it up and stick with it because there is definitely that transition period while your body adjusts. That can vary for people from a couple weeks to a couple months. So I know it can be discouraging. But the results really are great, if you just stick it out. :)

I do this all the time! I know lots of grocery-store foods are made to last on the shelves as long as possible so that they're bought before they are supposed to go bad. But I'm the same way about the preservative thing. I say: an ingredient list for something should generally contain the same things I'd stock my home with if I were to actually be making it from scratch. If it has any extra stuff, then I pass it up. I try to bring *real* foods into my home. Plus, I try to make as much from scratch, but it isn't ideal to do everything that way. So I definitely get frustrated when I can't find a "real" or "natural" version of a particular food item at the grocery store!

So far, we've only been to the local Home Depot and Lowe's who both didn't carry any farmhouse sinks.

Thanks everybody for the recommendations! I'm off to search for my sink now!

We just bought our first house and have to fix up the kitchen. We loove farmhouse sinks, but also love a more industrial kitchen look.

That stainless steel one from Susan and Ryan's farmhouse would seriously be perfect. I can't find the source though. Does anyone know where it is from?

I agree with frequenting flea markets, thrift stores, goodwill, salvation army, yard/garage sales.

I would add that you can also find some fun and quirky stuff on UrbanOutfitters.com and ModCloth.com

Other than that, think outside the box a little bit too, like AnnabelVita said. Repurpose some of your fun finds in unexpected ways.

I love that stuff too! Good luck and have fun evolving the style! :)

Good Questions

I am going through the same thing right now. I just don't want to do anything in the kitchen and am relying on less than ideal options. I usually cook all week: breakfasts, dinners, leftovers for lunch... Plus I like to make a cake, pie, or cookies for my sweet tooth throughout the week. I even find it fun to cook or make things from scratch that people usually buy at the grocery store, just for the heck of it.
But, I've noticed that my process seems to go through cycles. I regularly get inspired and burned out. Eventually it picks back up again. For me, it's when I become really sick and tired of eating take-out food and packaged, convenience foods from the grocery store.
Don't worry! :) Somewhere along the way you'll hit that magic combination of being tired enough of that stuff and also finding the something that inspires you to make it back into the kitchen. Even if it is just baby steps getting back into the old routine, you'll get there.

I've seen these on their site before. I want to get one but am curious about how they perform when actually put to use.

Anybody have any experience with them?

At first glance that stick of butter sounds like a lot. But I've made homemade granola from several recipes before and they all call for 1/3 to 1/2 cup of oil. She is calling for 1/2 cup butter. That sounds about right to me...

This is kinda cool in a way though. Like a grown-up's fort or tree house. It definitely seems cozy and good place to get lost for a few hours.

i'm curious about the ground size as well. i've never brewed coffee like this so i'm not familiar with the pour-over particle size. i have a coffee grinder that i use for my auto drip (with metal filter, so i grind little coarser than with a paper filter) and my french press. where would this fall in the spectrum?

i don't have the chemex, yet, but it's on my list. i'd love to get the KONE filter to go with it. this is great! seriously, the one thing holding me back from the chemex was those paper filters.

I am also curious about what Sambuka asked. I love butcher block counters, but I don't really get how to use them either. I might sound stupid asking, but: Are they used like regular countertops, that just happen to be wood? Or do you use them like a butcher's block?
