My Clean usually consists of a sweep/vacuum and windex of glass tabletop surfaces an hour or so before, and a quick pillow toss back to the sides of the couch as i run to answer the door... I like having a neat and clean place to live on a daily basis, and I don't have the type of friends that walk around with a white glove or would 'poo poo' me if i miss a few dust bunnies in a corner.

I wipe my counters down after I cook on a regular basis, and find that this list is more intimidating then it is helpful. Do you really need to clean and prep your house a WEEK ahead of time?! It is much less of a big task to just do these things as they need to be done... walking out the door and spy a cobweb? grab the broom and give it a swipe. Heading to bed and notice a dusty sill? give it a wipe down before you tuck in and stop stressing just because you are worried about your "friends" judging you. It is your HOME, where you LIVE... it doesn't need to be sterile as an operating room.

I'm extremely sensitive to smoke, and notice it both in public and at home... It is something that gives me an almost instant headache and because of this I wish that there was no smoking allowed anywhere, period. It has no health benefits so I truly don't get why people do it in any case!
I can be driving in my car with my windows up and can tell if someone is smoking in theirs two cars ahead of me with their window cracked without seeing it. Same goes for neighbors, it somehow sneaks into the vents and through the walls though I haven't found a source I can even block off or properly filter to try and minimize the effects. As much as I believe that people have every right to enjoy their home, I don't disagree that smoke can be a big problem and as it is detrimental to both my health and the smokers, I can't get upset if it is disallowed.

I dont know whats up lately, but i've been on the 'before' train a lot more than the 'after'. I love before after posts and was excited to see what they did... but when I saw that dining room amoeba/bacteria (?) wallpaper and the old wood accent wall I visibly cringed. Framing out that bar seating area made it seem to shrink to about half its size, and though there are certain aspects of the kids area I like, I agree that the green trim looks like forgotten painters tape. For an area that doesn't have a door to separate it from the other rooms, it is just too bizarre and different looking with that wallpaper and those (polka dot?) doors.

I'm normally one to like afters more than the before, but this after is not for me, I dislike the white wainscotting they put underneath the desk, not a fan of the final wood tone or how the drawer is so visible against the paint of the legs, and am not a fan of the final dark tone of the handles...

I feel that if the underside of the desk was painted the same turquoise hue instead of the white that sort of comes from nowhere and fits with nothing the wainscotting would recede and not bother me quite as much. I would have personally painted the drawer out too, and left the natural wood top, the stripe on top is cute, but right now the whole piece is just not totally pulled together.
Another thought to make it fit together a bit better would be to leave the horizontal wood pieces on the outside natural wood as well, then perhaps I wouldn't find the drawer sticks out quite so much like a sore thumb.

To each our own

Hopefully this was meant to stir comments on home accessibility upgrades... or ideas for how to send long distance home improvement gifts to make having to stay in for long periods bearable...

to add to that I also required a top floor corner unit, which I got :) couldn't even fathom buying a place and having to hear people walking above us.

What 'Must-Haves' Did You Let Go Of When Buying Your First Home?

My wishlist was 2Br+den 1.5 bath, laundry in unit with a balcony with BBQ's allowed

My absolute uncompromising list consisted of 1Br+den, full bath, laundry in the building and balcony with BBQ.. yup, i'd give up a half bath and a bedroom and a half before I would even consider giving up some outdoor space.

The place we ended up buying is listed as a 2br, but the second room is the square footage of a queen size bed, great as an office space though! we have 1 full bath, in unit laundry and a balcony with a great view. I couldn't love my place more!!

I think a bench on one side, arm chairs on the end and armless chairs in that same style on the other side would be cute

I love that style of drawer pull, and find the mix of stainless steel counter and stained butcherblock gorgeous. Makes me want to stain the top of my chopping block cart

Do you provide other solutions for the cats to scratch? posts, cardboard, etc.? making these more readily available may help in addition to using deterrents around the bed, there are some sprays you can get from the pet store that deter the cats to spray around the bed, and perhaps throw in a catnip spray on the post to make it more appealing.

anniebanani - it is considered rude to hijack another's post with your own question, especially when there is no relation at all between the two. I would suggest submitting your question to the AT moderators and letting them post it to it's own page. Provide them with pictures of the space as is to get the best feedback.

Am I the only one who has no clue how that mirror could have possibly gotten into the space? It doesn't look like it has any seams where two pieces of glass butt up against each other within the frame, and it looks far too wide and tall to have ever gone through a standard door.
Any hints?

How is this different than living in a duplex or triplex? many homes in my city have been split into two side by side separate units. The way this was worded would make me think the home itself has some sort of temporary wall between the two sides of the home, or just uninsulated drywall (which would be a fire hazard as there would be no stopping a fire in one unit from spreading to the second).

I'm just confused how any house guests would be 'surprised' by the proximity of neighbours, is this the first house of its kind in a small town where this type of dwelling is unheard of, or are all of your guests from far away?
