I would add another "DO" to the list:
As soon as you've received, assembled, and lived with your item some time, give it a review for the people who follow in your footsteps. What were the discrepancies between the online representation and your experience of the item? What's the quality like? Would you recommend this item to your friend?

My first adult Christmas tree was aluminum. And though it was sort of small, it was gorgeous! We used a color wheel instead of string lights (a big no-no on aluminum trees), and the lighting was awesome! A homemade Sputnik tree topper, a garland chain cut of rings from holographic paper, and a few select retro ornaments made it perfect.

Color me completely underwhelmed. Seems just like gratuitous advertisement so someone can add "Featured on" to their website.

I can think of a lot more features that would bring an autumn terrace to life than a still-life arrangements of pumpkins.

We tried to do a combination of 2 & 3 after we bought our house. We bought 8 small shelves for $16.00 each from Walmart. Then we trimmed the front and top out with wood to make them appear built in.

I just don't think we'll ever be taking these anywhere. Ripping them out & rebuilding properly when we have the money? Definitely!

Built-Ins that Aren't

When my grandmother passed away, my mother and aunts distributed all of the equipment from her kitchen. She was a mighty cook (of the Southern variety) and had the equipment that goes along with cooking large meals 2 times a day. I now find my kitchen shelves filled with her bowls and jars and pots and dishes, and I can't get rid of them.

I don't need it all; my kitchen was certainly well-stocked before I got grandma's stuff, but I can't just send it away. The memories of the breakfasts she used to cook me when I was sick from school and all the times our family gathered in her kitchen are too tied to it all. I find myself almost resenting my mom & aunts for giving all that stuff to me.

I fear I will never be able to send it down the road.

Captain's Bed is awful!

West Elm Bed doesn't look very practical--seems like a pain to lift the mattress to get to storage.

These are all expensive! I really like this storage bed--simple & clean king size storage bed for under $400! http://www.cymax.com/NoBot/Prepac-Manhattan-Full-Platform-Storage-Bed-EBD-5600-3.htm

When we started discovering hidden caches of cat pee in our home, we tried the nature's miracle and closing off rooms. But then our female, spayed cat stood on a rug in our kitchen and sprayed while she was looking right at us.

We quarantined Trixie to a separate room for about a month. The vet prescribed prozac also. After about a month of no spraying, we started letting her out of her room to interact with the other house animals again.

Things are definitely better now. She's off prozac, has the run of the house, and hasn't sprayed. Behavior modification for kitties takes a lot of time and dedication b/c they don't really respond to positive or negative reinforcement. But I can testify that it is possible.

Just an FYI--
Dan Kiley was a landscape architect. There's a definite difference between the two professions--

"Landscape architecture is a registered, state regulated profession, requiring a specific professional education and successful completion of a registration exam. Landscape design is not a state regulated profession and requires no specific professional academic credential." (Quote from Columbia University website)

As a landscape architect, I can say that I definitely prefer to have my academic & professional expertise credited. (Think architect vs builder...or maybe even registered interior designer vs. interior decorator)

In South Carolina, much like Texas, fans are a must to supplement the AC (allows you to keep the thermostat temperature higher). When we recently bought our home, we installed 2 ceiling fans in the guest rooms that were without. The only fan that doesn't get used *much* is the one in the kitchen (unless I burn dinner). It's not the dust that bothers me, as we clean them monthly; the fan was installed to have some overlap with a skylight. If it's on during the day, there is a weird strobe-like, seizure-inducing effect. But I still won't take it down--it's useful at night!

I know a lot of people who can't sleep without the white noise of a fan.
