Those new countertops are lovely and make a huge difference! I am hoping to install new ones to give my kitchen a facelift as well. Very good job!

toastercat,

If you to to Christina's page, she has a link to a drawing that shows the layout of the room and how the sofa bed opens lengthwise to fit in the allotted space. It is fabulous!

I, however, am curious about the same matter as RocketScientist. The couch itself is over $800. I haven't had any luck finding them for sale on Craigslist. I know Christina got 15% the couch, but that only leaves a very tiny (less than $80) budget for everything else. Did she buy a display or a damaged model? I'd love to know how she got this great transformation for the price!

That last photo looks like the drawer is head-butting the floor. I find this hilarious.

Really looking forward to seeing your hard work and transformation in this space! Lot's of potential here!

My 2013 New Year's Resolution is to continue trimming away the excess in my life so that I can have the time and energy to appreciate what I truly value: my loved ones, my health/wellness, my faith, my work purpose, and my hobbies. To prioritize those things will mean limiting time on distractions, half-hearted commitments, wasteful spending, time in front of screens, and uninspiring people.

My 2013 goals (and a link to my 30 Things Before I Turn 30 list are here: http://wealthnotmoney.blogspot.com/2013/01/goals-for-new-year.html

I want to be more efficient with my freezer. On days when I feel uninspired to cook, it would be great to pull out a frozen meal I thought to make a double batch of earlier. This past year I got better at freezing specific foods or ingredients (a CSA box will do that to you!), and now I'd like to step up my freezer game.

Several of these comments offer microwaving as a suggestion, but the reader asking the question said she doesn't have a microwave. I typically do stove-top melting as well, but it is indeed so messy. The slow cooker idea sounds fantastic!

I'm more of a minimalist, so most of my house has furnishings, a few accessories, and that's it. I don't have anything stored in my attic because I figure if I'm not using it, I don't need to hang onto it.

That being said, I also have a kitschy tiki bar in my basement rec room. It is PACKED with tiki mugs and memorabilia from my travels. It the opposite aesthetic of the rest of my home. That's what I love about it being my home... I can embrace my design choices and be a contradiction in my own living space! I have no shame about my love for the tiki stuff.

I love yellow in my kitchen! My cabinets are dark, my walls are white, and I have yellow accents here and there (coffee mugs, tea towel, spatula, etc.) It's just enough of a pop.

Why do you post this literally the day AFTER I threw out my chard stems? I tried to sautee some and they were too fibrous for me to enjoy, but some of these other ideas never occurred to me. Haha, I guess I'll try them out next round!

I have these for dining chairs also! Some people like them, some don't. I've never found them to be uncomfortable, though I know they aren't exactly cushy and squishy. But they are very easy to clean, which is a random perk =)

There are plenty of aesthetic choices others make that I just don't get. To each their own, I suppose!

What a lovely idea! I'm definitely going to try it. I've wanted a large triptych above my couch for a while now, but I can't afford a canvas transfer of that size. If this DIY doesn't work for me, I can always use the canvas for something else!

I tried carob chips at a friend's house. She is vegan and I'm always inspired by the variety of foods she uses. I thought they tasted similar to chocolate covered raisins, with a sort of fruit note to them. I'm not vegan and don't know if I would buy them, but I certainly had no problem eating them in foods prepared by someone else!

I have a friend who has been going through some tough stuff, and tends to wall himself out like a turtle retracting in its shell. I've taken to spontaneously placing mix CDs under his door in hopes that it might cheer him up.

Charlie is the man! I wasn't exposed to his films until college. They are all wonderful and have a magical quality about them that appeals to children, as well as a morally relevant theme for adults.

It may not seem shocking nowadays with SNL parodies and YouTube, but to impersonate and make fun of Adolf Hitler WHILE he was in power? That took some brass ones. Chaplin was not a saint by any means, but man was that guy talented!

My father, uncles, cousins, and my dad's friends have all come to my house to help re-shingle my garage roof, gut and renovate my entire bathroom, update the soil grading and landscape around my home, and to install a new water heater. There are carpenters, plumbers mechanics, contractors, and engineers in the mix... but mostly it is just about offering useful labor. I am not skilled in any of those things, so I help with what I can and provide food and beverage. They do these things for me because my dad has fixes their cars and helps them cut down trees. I helped my uncle make a promotional video for his business when he needed one (since that is more my area of expertise). We all help out one another. I'm really grateful to have a family like that.

I, too, am looking for an economical way to cover the very old and yellowed backsplash tile in my kitchen. I have great 65-year-old cabinets that just needed a little TLC, but the tile needs to go. Concrete covered boards? I'd love to hear more about that endeavor!
