I am splitting time between a 800 sq. ft apartment in southern France (two small for me, as I have two kids and tow, and various and sundry visitors) and a 2000 sq. ft house in the US 9 (too big- I don't want to buy furniture just to 'fill it')' Honestly, for a family of four, about 1500 sq feet is a very comfortable size...though I'll take the extra room with a lap pool, if anyone wants to know what I'd like for my birthday. WHY are the dual flush systems so expensive here? Overseas, every half way decent cafe bathroom has them (save for the ones that stick to Turkish...a disaster in a bar after a few pints, if you ask me). Why are we so archaic in our plumbing and heating systems? European radiators are so cool, flush to the wall...if hostels can afford them, can't everyone? Well, maybe I'll post my kitchen re-do when we have enough money to redo. And by enough money, I mean about $4,000. That's my really real budget. What do I have to work with? Try knotty pine cabinetry stained honey- and covered in 50 yrs of grease, red laminate countertops and backsplash, and green vinyl flooring. I was drawn to this photo because of the schoolhouse light (I bought a Lowe's version this weekend). I'm painting the existing cabinets bright white, splurging (for me) on granite countertops and short backsplash, and marmoleum floors-with my husband providing labor. With money 'left over' we'll put in a new stainless sink and new faucet. I can't wait. Right now, my kitchen makes me vomit. I tried going dryer-free...for a year. It was fine in fall and spring, but in winter, I ended up drying stuff all over the house, and in summer, the humidity meant everything stayed wet, wet, wet. But, the year spent dryer-free taught me to be more judicious about what really needed to be put in a dryer and what is just fine air dried.
