I loved this on the house tour, I love it all over again now. Just beautiful.

Gorgeous. There's something I love in every picture, right up to the itchy-scratchy floorplan.

One small question though: why do you get to question everything that I bring into my home? (Yay for kicks for grammar nerds!)

They don't necessarily have to be plumbed in - you can get electric versions (that's what I'll be getting when I renovate my bathroom and put some heating in) and you can also get mixed versions that use central heating when it's running and have an electric override function so you can have toasty towels and a warm bathroom even if you're not heating the rest of the house. They've been popular for decades in Britain (my parents have had them for as long as I can remember). The main thing is to get one that's "hot" enough - some of them, particularly cheaper ones, have a pretty weak power output so they're good for warming towels but won't really heat the room.

Heehee. I just went for a little walk with a colleague to stretch our legs and she popped into the supermarket to pick up some things for dinner. I hadn't mentioned this post, but quite independently she got all delighted when she managed to find white!! As she said, it's always a real coup when you find tp (or "pq" seeing as we're in France) that's not pink or flowery or perfumed.

Hey, thanks suziegoombs. Half of my place is in the throes of major renovations at the moment, but maybe by the time the next cure rolls round. :)

The small/cool comments have been on my mind all weekend. I've been pottering around my little apartment all weekend, doing odd jobs, thinking about how much I love my home, how much I'd love to share some of its nicer quirks with the friendlies on AT, and how I don't want to because it'd hurt if (the less friendly) people sneered.

"Sticks and stones", I know, but unkind words can and do hurt. I feel really bad for the people who got bashed in this year's small/cool.

Or the other choice DesignGod, would be to stop being a b*tch. You might enjoy it.

The meanness of some the comments this year is really p*ssing me off. What's wrong with you people? Do you really think that everyone's sitting back and applauding your snarkiness and rudeness? If something offends your delicate design sensibilities so much, why not just move on and look at the next thing? It's a flipping disgrace and you should be ashamed of yourselves for being so out of line about people's homes. Like eebnyc said, it's not like anyone's forcing you look.

As for the apartment, I think it's pretty cute. She's found some lovely furniture that really fits the mood of the place (I love the computer table and I think the dining table has great, solid piece that really has presence there in the middle of the floor) and she's put up some quirky affordable decoration like the prints, the sunny blue curtain and the pink fish that's hanging in the breeze in the kitchen. It's not as polished as a lot of the other entries, but don't crucify her for it. I reckon that apartment is just going to keep on getting nicer over time. All the best Lauren!

Hmmm, @Vbansal, I don't want to sound like a doubting Thomas, but I find it hard to believe that "Go India Medical Tourism dot com" is home to indepth discussions of designer adhesive film...

Agh, I LOVE the style behind the pink chair. I want it for my hallway. Wonder if it's available in France...

Btw, I'd like to edit my comment: "insulting and/or cruel". It's never necessary to be cruel. :)
Seriously though, the argument that "people who enter these competitions know what they're getting into" really riles me. There should be a certain level of respect displayed for other people's choices, houses and feelings, and I think that that standard has really slipped at the moment.
That's all. Back to work...

My feeling is that having more active moderation/babysitting of the comments would help. There's the usual sprinkling of helpful/positive comments, but there's a significant population who are just insulting and/or unnecessarily cruel. Even if my flat was in a fit state to be entered, there's no way I'd be throwing it open to this gang. It would be helpful to "remind" people of the rules of the game and ask them to play nicely or get out of the sandpit.

My loo door is always closed when I'm not in there (it's super-cold because I need to keep the window open for around six months until the water-logged ceiling dries out enough for the insurance to fix it) but open when I'm inside (I live alone and the room's TINY). :)
