As a former IKEA interior decorator, I was thrilled to learn about this style, some years ago. My husband and i have opposite body thermometers: he is always hot and I love being snuggled under 2-3 blankets in the winter. Now we each have our own personal duvet/blanket. We'll never go back.

Clementines (peeled and halved for toddlers) were a hit in my daughter's classroom. Anything other than plain fruit/veg needs to be sealed and hechshered (come from a certified kosher establishment). It makes things difficult.

These recipes are great, and can even be modified to add a particular type of grain or pasta if you think your kid will give it a go. I have a child who runs the gamut. She can be picky, but it is usually a power thing, not a taste thing. She actually like a wide range of vegetables, not that you would know. I feel confident that she will grow out of this stage, very comforted by this article from a few years back in the NY Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/10/dining/10pick.html?pagewanted=all

"Most children eat a wide variety of foods until they are around 2, when they suddenly stop. The phase can last until the child is 4 or 5. It’s an evolutionary response, researchers believe. Toddlers’ taste buds shut down at about the time they start walking, giving them more control over what they eat. “If we just went running out of the cave as little cave babies and stuck anything in our mouths, that would have been potentially very dangerous,” Dr. Cooke said."

Jeez, judgy people......

My daughter will almost always eat chili (I'm being honest here, she won't TOUCH a bowl covered in delicious wilted greens) and a quick red lentil soup. When I tell her we're having lentil soup for dinner she actually says "YAY!" I chop an onion, a couple carrots, a sweet potato (white sweet potatoes are great in this), a cup of red lentils, some thyme, bay leaves, cumin, stock, a splash of wine, cook for 20 min. DONE. Sometimes I serve it with some sliced turkey sausage, or crumpled bacon on top. I keep the meat separate and I have nice vegetarian leftovers for lunch the next couple of days.

I think I learned to like (not love) eggplant, last week, in a lovely fresh pasta sauce (thanks Jamie Oliver, yum).

I learned to love bitter greens besides spinach this summer: I toss it chopped in everything or saute and eat it over toast with a fried egg (now my favorite breakfast).

I love that you have this post, but for all the Goys out there, A shiksa is an awful Jewish term for a non-jewish woman. If you are a shiksa, please don't call yourself that. Or if you do, know that you've got to put a lot of humor in the conversation, since you're basically calling yourself an interloping whore.

Goy or gentile is much nicer.

My lovely goy husband and brother in-law are IN LOVE with my bubby's brisket recipe. WIN.

Working at Ikea, we did have a staff canteen. I'd worked someplace with one before, and I did like it. Now I work in a small synagogue and if I'm not going out to eat with my boss, I try to bring my own. I don't feel comfortable eating in the conference room, since congregants use the space as well. And the whole Kosher thing makes me a bit stressed (as I may not be so strict with the rules). I always pack veggie, but I don't have a kosher kitchen, so I try to keep it under wraps. It sucks. Thankfully, I'm usually alone in my office, so I can stink it up. I've never minded strongly scented foods.

I lovelovelove sour, funky beer. I always have to preface any taste offering to friends with, "I love this beer, but it's REALLY sour. You might hate it...." And they usually do. So sad. I usually can only get Gueuze style beers at Belgian bars around Philly.

I feel for you. I was nauseated (but didn't puke) for almost my entire pregnancy. I ate crap the entire time. Seriously. I didn't want to cook at all. I couldn't even look at chicken, fish or pork. I ate white bread pb&j (!!), boxed mac and cheese, some veg, and lots of grapefruit.

I tried sour things, ginger (ginger tea rocks, but it didn't help me eat), crackers, snacks, drinking enough water (peeing even more). Nothing really helped. You just get through it. And when your kid is here, it will start to fade away. So don't worry so much. It totally SUCKS, but you probably won't starve and your kid should be fine.

HANG IN THERE!
