How about a ground of farrow and ball's vert de terre, trim in a creamy white color, and door and other accents in black?

Not sure if that scheme would fit into the neighborhood, but I like how it is both earthy and modern at the same time.

I think Room and Board will customize many of its tables to your size needs. Worth a call to them to find out --

Monika -- I think much of the earlier collection is still available at Garnet Hill, just not as prominently displayed as the new stuff. You can also check out the Eileen Fisher website, which carries bed linens as well. Good luck.

Thanks for the comments. I have an exposed brick wall in another part of my house that I plan to paint opaque, so I can use that as my test area.

I don't think my brick is sealed -- it isn't shiny. But how can I know for sure?

Ideally, I'd go for white box modernism. But high modernism isn't forgiving. Space has to have great bones for it to work.

The recent curlicue modernism is attainable and easy to live in.

I would add Smith and Hawken to the list.

For a few weeks, spend a few hours each week going through your magazines and pulling out photos and articles that jump out at you. Then put them in a binder as Erin suggested. You'll still have the important pieces, they'll be much more accessible, and your husband will be happy.

Maybe I've read too many shelter magazines, but these photos seem to be canned shelter magazine style. Is canned eclecticism an oxymoron?

In the main living area, the small white side table between the two chairs isn't close enough for someone sitting in either chair to comfortably rest a drink on it. I have a vague recollection of Jeffrey Bilhuber quoting Billy Baldwin on good design being a place one can sit and comfortably set down a drink. (okay, I've definitely read too many shelter magazines)

They look too much like something I'd find in a hospital room.

I agree with Harley - I like the chairs as is. I have a newish one, and I wish it looked a bit worn.

Jonathan Adler also has a screen worth mentioning: http://www.jonathanadler.com/shop/product.php?productid=16657&cat=363&page=1

Old Hollywood style, slightly pricey at $850.

It's a bit asian, a bit traditional, might work with some modern.

Fantastic apartment, great terrace, and I appreciate that the owners don't feel the need to replace/update everything, and don't waste energy on a/c (that was in the article).

But how pretentious!

Tatyana -- I did miss the first response to your post.
But pointing out my oversight with "asked and answered" is a little snippy. I think this site is great, and I love reading everyone's comments and being able to share mine. I just wish we could keep things polite and (for lack of a better word) nice.

Very nice, and realistic for a change.

Tatyana -- Your advice to reverse the dining and living areas doesn't account for the narrowness of the dining area.
