Buy the real thing, only cry once. We have a number of original pieces that have weathered many years, to be passed down to us. As well, we have new original pieces that hopefully will be passed down to our children.

The yellow really brings out the yellow tones in the wood. I'd back off any yellow and bring in a blue tone for the paint. And to the Grey comment, I had this same issue - a reddish fir fireplace, but the apartment was a painted monotone butter creme, so we went with a very pale blueish grey and it looks very clean, while still showcasing the wood.

I hate this monochrome monolithic Mondrian mockery.
