Although I use it for recycling instead of garbage, the Simple Human slim step can is simply awesome. http://www.simplehuman.com/products/trash-cans/kitchen/slim-plastic-step.html

Decent capacity, lightweight, unobtrusive, soft close lid which *locks* -- what's not to like? And for the really hip folks out there, it also comes in black or gray. My only gripe is to mind your fingers when the lid is opened all the way if you are dumping it into a larger outdoor recycling can.

They have these at Bed, Bath and Beyond, so take 20% off that $40 price tag. Very reasonable.

I too do not understand any tray that doesn't have a lip of some sort to prevent things from rolling off. Crate and Barrel consistently has a few bed tray styles in stock (with lips), albeit none of them are design juggernauts. Standing trays can also be a pretty awesome baby shower gift -- great for mom during bed rest or the days after birth.

I am constantly spacing out around the house -- I mean multitasking -- so an electric kettle offers not only a speedy and safe tool to heat and pour water, but I don't need to worry about leaving a (scentless) pot of water boiling on the stove (again). I use my kettle at least once daily. I just wish that it had a little bell when the water was done, however, a thermal carafe does keep the water hot for a fairly long time.

Pretty, sure. Practical, probably. Maybe it takes some practice, but I have jammed my toes on a friend's wooden shower "mat" waaaayy too many times going into the shower to recommend these.

There are four EatSmart scale styles on Amazon for the "EatSmart Precision Digital Bathroom Scale" search on Amazon. I opted for a different one than gochrisgo, but all of them get rave reviews and are $27 - $37 (pssst! the over $30 ones have free shipping!). Great buy, no-frills, and I don't expect to have to buy another for many years.

After years of not having a scale, I finally bit the bullet. It's not part of this "best" list, but I have to say that I am very pleased with the EatSmart Precision Premium Digital Bathroom Scale. It's accurate, consistent, slim and reasonably nice to look at (sort of a cross between the Salter and the Seca). You don't even have to tap it first before you step on. Extra bonus for those of us who are getting a little older, the numbers are big and brightly backlit in blue -- this means no squinting or guessing, which could be good or bad, I suppose. For around $35 on various sites, it's a most excellent bang for your buck.

I love to have a nice bottle of olive oil and some balsamic vinegar (along with S&P and a vegetable peeler), especially since there's a regular farmer's market downtown. There's nothing better for fresh veggies and some nice bread.
